See if you can get another opinion.  Go see Peter Axford at Eurosport (08) 8362 2333.  He is a good Alfa member and a good mate.
If the engine is noisy ie sounds like a diesel, then definitely worn cams, you can pull cams cover off and see for yourself.  You might be lucky in just needing cams.  Needs to be first hand diagnosis ie see Peter or other mechanic, an Alfa one.

Thanks for the advice. I took my car to Eurosport when I got the quote, someone that worked there said that the price sounded about right.
The previous mechanic already had a look at the cams he said that they had dropped and didn't look good. The car has been sitting in the driveway for awhile, been trying to get money together to do something for it. Still not sure if it's worth it though

What are the details of the car?,ie colour, trans, etc, etc.

Trans= manual
it has all power options (front/rear windows, seats, etc) all working, no sunroof though.

redbook has more details on it:

Ouch, 7k is really steep on a car that you will definitely not get your money back if you decide to sell it.

Also, a second hand engine is all well and good, but you don't know how well it has been maintained and may develop the same issue as your current motor.

Sell the car as a whole or part it out and cut your looses.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers, Andrew.

After stewing over it for a long time I think I will sell my car. :-\ Since you guys have been very helpful with your suggestions and advice I thought I'd offer it here on this forum first.

Below are photos, registration details (Yes it's parked at this address. Its registered till December, you can check on Ezyreg) and a quote of the problems discovered. Odometer has 172k, the body and interior are in good condition, wheels seem decent too. If you want more general info on the car redbook.com.au has it here: https://www.redbook.com.au/cars/research/used/details/2004-alfa-romeo-156-ti-manual-my04/SPOT-ITM-205772

I paid $2000 for the car. If someone is feeling generous it'd be nice to recoup this. You may contact me by phone/text 0403 844 617 or private message through the forum (haven't used this before, not sure how it works).

Once again thanks to everyone, I still love Alfas and hope to own one again someday.

Alex Rogovik.

I'm wondering why the second hand engine is so expensive in the quote. I've seen complete running cars going for under 2000 in QLD and engines as cheap as 800. Heck, I got my '02 156 twin spark cheaper than 3000 and it's in decent condition.

the mechanic looked deep into my eyes and said, "i know a guy and he'll get you a good motor" later on i asked what sort of warranty i got on parts and labor, he said the standard 3 month warranty   ???

bazzbazz

3 month warranty for parts from wreckers IS standard. (well it is here in Queensland)

And Warsch is right, if the $3,000 is just for the second hand motor alone, it's bloody outrageous no matter how good it is.

Just my personal opinion.

Looking around ebay 156 Ti parts seem to be selling for a premium.
