Hi All
Has anyone had an issue with their EGR? My mechanic advises that the EGR has suffered carbon build up resulting in the EGR valve seizing up. Basically the car starts and dies almost immediately; the seized valve stops the fuel injection system.
He has run a diagnostic and and bypassed or bridged the message sent from the EGR and the car does in fact start.
I have no reason to mistrust him when he advises that a new EGR is AU$879.00 but I'd be silly not to check.
I look forward to your advice on price and alternatives.
Thank you
Jane

Lots of info about the EGR valve, you should take your car to one of the club supporter Alfa specialist workshops for no fuss advice and repair.

Brunswick = Maranello Pur Sang, Bruno and Gianocarlo will look after you.
Bayswater = Monza Motors, Hugh
Clayton = Mauceri Motors, Seby

There are others but these are the one of the top of my head.

What you have is a common issue and the EGR can be bypass with some modifications ie blanking off.  Not a disaster.

Find a decent independent mechanic who works on Alfa's all the time.
The EGR valve is pricey, but that price is a mechanics 100% marked up version (not unreasonable in itself, it's a business after all).

The valve itself is easy to swap, blanking it (unplugging it?) is only a temporary measure, it's there for a reason.

Hi Jane,

You can buy a new EGR valve locally for less than half the price your mechanic quoted you.

Give the guys at Italian Automotive Spares in Brunswick East a call, a friend of mine bought an EGR valve from them recently and was just under $300, which is cheaper than buying one from overseas once you factor in the conversion and shipping costs.

One Alfa mechanic said out costs $1300 to replace. A stupid price when you can get an aftermarket one for a couple of hundred overseas.
