Last night we held the 105 workshop night for the Alfa Romeo 105 series at Maranello Pursang Motors in Brunswick.
Between Bruno, Giancarlo and John, there would be over 100 years Alfa Romeo knowledge.
Bruno and Giancarlo did their Alfa Romeo training at John's place in South Melbourne, well known to Alfa Romeo Owners called Pursang, [which means full blood], Motors.
After about 8 years, Bruno went out on his own, eventually starting Maranello Motors and then Pursang Motors property was sold about 6 years ago, so they put the band got back together forming Maranello Pursang Motors in Brunswick.
We were looking at a limit of 40 club members, but with the influx of new club members and 105 owners coming out of the woodwork, we ended up with 58 on the books and a few more that sneaked in, so we split the groups into 2 and Bruno did the racing and modifying 105's and Giancarlo did the servicing and repairing.
We were shown what to look for when buying a 105 coupe, such as accident damage, rust traps, bad modifications, what can go wrong and wear out.
The type of oil used in 105's is usually the thicker mineral oils, as they don't have hydraulic tappets like the newer 156's, which need the thin synthetic oils, the viscosity of the mineral oils to use depends on if it is a race car, road car with a newish engine or a car with an engine that has covered a lot of miles, Maranello Pursang Motors use Martini oils and lubricants as they have a good range and never have any problems with it.
The 105 coupes are lightweight around the boot area, so its best not to put any heavy objects in the boot as they flex and the rear 1/4 panel will eventually kink and a tow bar is a definate no-no, Vin Sharp from PACE makes a brace kit for these.
Another thing overlooked in the servicing of these twin cams, is the tappet clearances, they are set by measuring the clearances and removing the camshafts and replacing the shims, Giancarlo recomends this is done every 20,000klms, failure to attend to this results in burnt valves and a loss of performance.
We looked at suspension and why its a bad idea to put grease nipples on the bushes to stop squeeking, as the grease will ruin the bush material, how to put negative camber on the front suspension, and putting heavy duty dampers will crack the shock absorber towers.
If you are looking at buying a 105, it would be a good idea to have Maranello Pursang do a pre purchase check.
There was a barbeque at the start of the night with a gold coin donation, before the night started, there was also a show bag, with goodies such as posters, pens notepads, car deodorants, we had club members attend from as far away as Bendigo.
You can still buy new parts for the 105 series cars, as they were sold in America and very popular, there is a huge aftermarket industry, and even panels are available of differing quality, the parts are made all over the world.
Thank you to Mary, Bruno's wife and Marcia, Giancarlo's wife for all their help in organising this event, it was an informative workshop visit and i hoped those attending enjoyed it, Colin.
