Title: Brake Pad Choice
Post by: Fylnn on November 04, 2011, 04:32:44 PM
I have a GTV6 that have built as a PRC rally car.  The front brakes are late Mazda RX7 4 pot calipers and the rears are standard.  i have Ferod DS2500 pads in the rear and am now pondering what to put in the front before hitting the road.  I am tossing up DS2500 versus 3000.  Rally car brakes do get hot during competition but unlike racing we don't always get a chance to warm them up before the start.  You can sit in control for some time waiting to go and then it is on for young and old.

So I suppose my concern with the 3000 is that should I have just spent 30 minutes in control and then the red mist comes down, I could spear off at the first corner becuase they don't grip.  Against the other concern that with the 2500, I might be OK for the first half of the stage and then find they are not that great with the heat build up.

Any thoughts welcome.

Occasional left foot braking to keep the 3000's warm?

Extra vents to keep the 2500 cool?

I've run both pads in tarmac rallys and have no problem with initial temp, even on very short street stages.  that's the benifit of these pads as they have a high friction coefficient across a very wide operating range. My pic is the 3000 as they seem to have better initial bite

I had DS3000 on the front and DS2500 on the rear and thought the DS300 was a bit too aggressive. Now I run Endless type R on the front with Pagid on the rear and I'm happier with the combination. It turns out that GTR Skyline rear pads fit the front of the GTV6 - except they are not quite as deep.

IMHO cant go past Race Brakes RB74 best value for money pad around. I trust mine to always stop me. I run standard discs and calipers front and rear. Just put fresh ones in last week. $380 delivered for 4 corners.

RB74 is a very good compromise pad, but it has poor initial bite and is not as good hot as DS2500 / DS3000 or my current favorite Endless Type R
