Title: Video from Sandown AROCA vic Sprint yesterday
Post by: jimnielsen on June 13, 2011, 04:12:20 PM
A short video of (almost) an entire lap of Sandown, passing a couple of Skylines on the way to the fastest lap that I have managed thus far - 1.24.99 - but I am claiming it as a 1:24 anyway.

Perhaps the only thing better than passing skylines in an Alfa is passing a GTV in a Giulietta..

Jim , Good lap time. Was i getting a bit of the Jim Morrison & The Doors live  " Love me two times" in the background.

Can't wait for the "Light my Fire" live lap.

Yes... but I put it on soft so that it gets mixed up with the background noise so that the youtube police don't arrest me..

ps.. great day, thanks to Neil and all the organizers.. a little less fog though would be good next time..

Jim ,

Great to see the 155 complete an afternoon . You will have to start packing a lunch for future sprint meetings.

Very much enjoyed the morning, will apply for club membership first thing tuesday.
Doors and Grateful Dead, very much part of my life on an american university campus in the late seventies; of course lets not forget Led Zeppelin, Foghat, Eric Clapton, Lynard Skynard, REO Speedwagon, Derek & the Dominoes, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Boston ... etc.

I'm particularly enjoying this video of Mr. Racer21 falling off.  On the warm-up lap.

"after moving out of the way of the kitty litter from the audi a couple of times i slipping on kitty litter spewing out of the audi in front of me, the car went straight on into the grass and spun....."

Kudos for posting the video, I wouldn't have...

Feel bad for the bloke, he ended his day early with 2 destroyed rims, suspension damage and light panel damage.

Not sure why the panel damage was so light, given the fence was moved as per photos.

Lesson here for all; if the car in front is dropping kitty litter on the warm up, drop back instead of trying to avoid the stone chips ... your day won't potentially be cut short.

Indeed - and potentially also a "please send cash" request from Sandown for the guard rail repairs.  But given the speed and impact he got of extremely lightly.

Maybe(?) getting the left wheels onto the slippery grass at 1min 30secs would not have helped either.

Where did that Audi pick up all that kitty litter from?  Previous run that he went off?

Hi guys,

Here is a preview of the video I am putting together of the AROCA Sandown Sprints on June 12th 2011. I hope you guys enjoy and would love any feedback.

Thank you to all who've already purchased a DVD. For those who've missed out and would like a copy please PM me or contact me via the website link in my signature. The final DVD will feature a highlights video extended on from the preview video above and approximately two hours of video coverage of a total of around 16 sessions from a number of different angles broken down into run groups. The dvd will be packed with colour cover and disk print and costs $20 posted.

And before any of you worry, the main part of the DVD will have no music!

Thanks,

Ben

Yeah, from personal experience 2 wheels on a loose/slippery surface while exiting a turn never ends well :)

Jim, 1:24, WOW!, fastest Alfa of the day, congrats.  Crikey that car accelerates quickly, you make it look so easy and smooth, your obviously having heaps of fun while scaring yourself at the same time!

I like the soundtrack, is that 'Stig approved' music?

Ben

I would prefer music in the video, much more interesting to watch and listen to.

Cheers

Hi Neil,

I'll keep music in the highlights part of the DVD like the preview. The section which has all of the footage from the different sessions probably should have no music though so that people can hear their cars. Besides I think people would tire of my music taste after around two hours! =P

Ben,

If its anything like my son's it would be much sooner than 2 hours.

Ben

Excellent video. I like how you started at drivers briefing and all the different positions around the track, also the music is good in the background so you can still hear the cars. I like the black and white, maybe a touch lighter?, it reminded me of the cold morning starts and then the change to colour as the day warms up, great work!

Thanks for the compliment Frank! =)
The next one I want to try and get some more atmosphere footage in the pit area for the start of the video to tell more a story of the day but was too busy trying to get to everyone to see if they wanted a DVD that I didn't have time.
You're the second person to mention the black and white being a bit dark, looks fine on my screen but will brighten it up a touch for the DVD version.

Another Sandown video - this time from Ray Pignataros' Alfasud chasing a GTV...Unfortunately he does let a Sykline slip by...

.. just a note this video was made using a Kodak ZX1 video camera - great video and audio quality from such a small low cost device...

Here are a couple of clips from the camera in the Ricciardi.

Following one of the Lancers... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq09BMmz0cE

My best lap... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dokESXWSaQ

On my last session I spent a couple of fun laps trying to keep up with the Blanden 105, but unfortunately made a mistake with the camera and didn't have it running - the vids are a lot more interesting when there's stuff happening with other cars.

Looking forward to Ben's DVD - great initiative Ben, and I hope it's something you can carry on to other events.

Thanks Jim! I beg to differ - the 155 looks much scarier with all that power  ;)

I used RaceRender2 (http://www.racerender.com/RR2/Features.html) to merge the data. It seems to do what I want, and wasn't expensive. There's pricier software that does more and looks better, but this is all I need for the moment.

Tim, I haven't seen that software before - but it sure looks a bargain.  I will give it a try and see how it compares to the trackvision software (that is a bit expensive and a bit complicated..)

Paul.. that's Alan Goodall in the 75 - unfortunately he wasn't at Sandown last weekend to continue the struggle. In the vid with the 75 I pass under the big sign going up the hill on the back straight doing 180kph - last weekend, as you can see from the video the car is now at 205 kph at the same point... so it has got faster.

Jim,

Being in Qld, I haven't seen your car lately. Is it fitted with a roll cage now?

The second question is about the air/fuel ratios displayed in the video. I don't know too much about boosted ratios and values like I have seen seem odd. Care to explain?

Tx.
Title: Re: Video from Sandown AROCA vic Sprint yesterday
Post by: jimnielsen on June 16, 2011, 09:21:09 AM
MD - no, I don't have a roll cage for it yet, although I am reminded of the usefulness of these devices each time i drive the car at Phillip Island. I was planning to implement one this year, however, other technical issues have prevented me from getting to it. - But its certainly the next thing on the list when I am satisfied that the car is working properly.

The AFR's on the video are gasoline AFR values but I am running the car on E85 fuel. (The E85 I am using comes from Jaguar fuels, its 85% CSR Ethanol and 15% 98RON Gasoline). I prefer the petrol AFR numbers because I am used to them! The lambda values just don't 'say' anything to me. We are running the car at approx 10.2 AFR at WOT. This is pretty rich, even for an E85 car - but the we are running 1.45bar boost with a compression ratio of 9.5:1. The fact that the values slam back to AFR 22.5 when you close the throttle is more of a function of the Innovate motorsports LC-1 behaviour than anything else..I am really only interested in the WOT numbers.

cheers, jim.

Hi all, I't's taken me while to post some video on Youtube.
Jim goes past me up the back straight 58 seconds in (along with everyone else it seems!) I couldn't run full boost due to a suspected fuel delivery problem but my pressure gauge died so couldn't test so was a bit slow for run group 1 with a 1.32.9 listed as my best time (previous best of 1.28.7 on full boost)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYJaNpvrrHY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYJaNpvrrHY)

It's not often I get to go past a 911 so I had to include this!

Jim,

The correct collective noun for MX5's is a SALON of MX5's or a HAIRDRESSING SALON of MX5's, you should know that.

And once again, I have to proudly announce, Susan beats Ray, AGAIN.  1:38.707 vs 1:39.996.

Cheers all

The end of that video clip was as close as i could get all day . Ray actually exits into the pits, and from experience i know what the Henderson car does to my car  in a straight line.

Hi Paul (Edwards),

I've been away for the weekend so have kind of missed posting a timely response to your question re Sandown. Yes, fortunately for me Sandown is a bit like a couple of drag strips with a few of corners thrown in to connect them and it does favour big horsepower vehicles. Funnily enough last weekend was the first time I actually noticed the 'home of horsepower' motto on the circuit signage and it reminded me how lucky we are that they continue to run the 4 legged variety there otherwise our 'home' track would probably go the way other great tracks interstate like Oran Park etc.

Cheers, Andrew Aggenbach
