I have an issue with my 2000 916 GTV V6 where after about 10-15 minutes after start up, my speedo will stop working and the ABS & Hand Brake warning lights appear. This had occurred immediately after I went to get the timing belt changed. When I went to take it back to get it checked, the mechanic didn't know what could be causing this issue, but suspected that the ABS/Speed sensor needed to be replaced. If that is the case, where is this sensor located and how much will it cost to get a new one? Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated as I love to go on drives, but given the amount of speed cameras around this state, it's not ideal to guess how fast I'm going by using the tacho as a reference 8) Cheers.
Ok, before replacing anything you need to have the car hooked up to the appropriate Alfa Diagnostic software, otherwise your wasting time & money.
It will tell you whether it is just a speed sensor on the wheel or something more serious, such as a faulty ABS unit. Check out the club sponsors, I am sure most of them will have the required diagnostic tools.
Just my opinion.
So ran the diagnostic and it's referencing the ABS/Speed sensor. Where would this sensor be located? How much would it code to have it replaced and is this an extensive job?
Well first of all the diagnostics will tell you WHICH wheel the speed sensor has failed on.
They are fitted on the hub and quite simple to replace.

Sorry I forgot to mention that whilst I had the timing belt changed, I also had both of the front rotors replaced as it was starting to fade badly. The mechanic who did the change said that with this model of Alfa Romeo, the speed sensor was located on the gear box (?) and yet he couldn't tell me exactly where. Would you be able to show me in a picture where on the wheel hub the sensor would be? Thanks for the help :-)

It's hard to find a good mechanic for Alfa Romeo's out at Point Cook area. Even the so called "Euro Specialists" really ought to rename themselves as just "German Specialists" since they wouldn't work on any other makes :-\

Not exactly next door to Point Cook, however Maranello Pursang in Brunswick could be the closest.
Given the prevailing 5klm travel restriction you could argue repair of the ABS is a safety critical requirement.
