Title: In-Car Cameras
Post by: MD on April 11, 2020, 03:37:14 PM
I am looking for an in-car camera suitable for locating behind the driver to provide a cabin operation view as well as what's happening outside on the track.
Ideally the recorder and display should be remote from the camera so that the driver can see what is being recorded, stop and start the recording as and when required. This also allows the placement of the camera at the most advantageous position to capture the best view.

While most recorders have a built in microphone, it often gets overloaded by the level of cabin noise and there is little if any wind guard associated with them so a socket for an external microphone is very handy .

I actually have such a camera system and it has worked well. Regrettably it is just a generic Chinese brand but the battery is failing and it is impossible to find a substitute or replacement so I am looking for a new camera set up.

Just to recap. A camera like Go Pro that is a recorder, camera and display all in one package or any other brand of the same nature is not what I am looking for.

All leads welcome.

What might do the trick is one of the Wireless Dome security cameras, HD Video, wireless and can be operated/slewed/zoomed operated by your smart phone  while driving (if your brave) and records to it as well.

As for sound, you should be able to plug a dedicated mic into your phone and use it to record voice/car audio while watching/recording the video.

There are hundreds to choose from online.

If you are looking for something a little more sophisticated, then there is the use of a dedicated security system with a Digital recorder that has multiple inputs for audio still can be operated via smartphone.

The best place to find exactly what suits your purpose/needs would be a security system specialist. They can at least show you what is available, or suggest the best way to do what you want. They can even show you an inexpensive way to set up something like the internal camera systems that the touring cars have, but on a much more realistic and affordable budget.

Hope that points you in the right direction at least.

Thanks for this creative patchwork. The most serious drawback is that my phone has a crank handle.  ::)

As I said I prefer a driver facing monitor/recorder with a remote plug in camera and microphone. Preferably a two camera input for front and back recording simultaneously. Currently I am thinking perhaps something they use on motorcycles. There is plenty of professional gear to do this but you have to get a house mortgage to pay for it.

As I said, for such a setup have a talk with your local security provider, they will have several options that will do just as you have described for you to choose from.

And for cheaper than you think.

Hi MD
Based on your requirements, I think this unit will do the job for modest money.

Yeah Bonno, I have seen these things and there are versions on the theme even cheaper. One drawback is the missing remote microphone capability. However for the money....getting closer. Also had a squizz at the much larger format displays that have 4 cameras and can display 4 segments simultaneously.
Could be interesting. Front view . Rear view. Office action plus  headshot of the driver for that OH SHEIT moment all displayed on a 177mm screen !
