Title: alfa 164
Post by: fazz164 on July 12, 2019, 04:31:34 PM
Ps, I assume QV means quattro valvole, 4 valves per cylinder, is this correct? Did the Busso V6 then have a 2 valve per cylinder, &, a QV, with 4 valves per cylinder?
  Please advise,
Cheers, Robert

I've never heard of a 164 QV, I have a 164Q q for quadrifoglio, four leaf clover. All Qs were 3.0 l manuals.

164's go by a few different names and meanings.

The standard 164 in Australia came with a 12 valve 3 litre V6 with SOHC from approx 1989 to 1992.

The 164Q in Australia (also known as the 164S) in America is again a 12 valve 3 litre V6 with SOHC with hotter cams, higher compression ratio and a 5 speed manual (with added skirts and spoiler) from approx 1991 to 1992.

The 164QV was only released in overseas markets and featured a 24 valve 3 litre V6 with quad cams (DOHC) from approx 1993 to 1997. Some of these were imported into Australia back in the 90s mainly by a chap called Brian Folley (I think that's his name) and there are still a few around today.

The 'Q' in 164Q is Quadrifoglio.
The 'QV' in 164QV is Quadrifoglio Verde.

Don't ask me why tho  :P

Hope this helps.
Andrew.

Thanks for the information guys. I therefore have a regular 1989 164, and a 1992  164 Q.

It might not stand to be the one dead set rule, but I'm pretty sure the QV came with factory fitted projector headlights. 15 years ago that was the give away to a special 164. I've only seen 2 QV's before and both found because we spotted the headlights.

Yup, the QV 24v versions were the 'series 2' models and came with the Bosch style projector headlights. However many people convert the series 1 models with the projector headlights from the series 2 (myself included). They bolt straight up but the wire connectors need modifying.

Just to add another bit of trivia - the HK cars were designated 168, apparently because the Chinese character for 164 is considered unlucky (translates to "all the way to death") while 168 is the reverse ("all the way to prosperity").

I had a look at a "168" that was in sale here in Perth a while back.

According to Wikipedia, if you have a manual Q it is actually a QV:

The 164 QV or Quadrifoglio Verde was available from 1990 to 1992 as the top of the range model. It was fitted with a bodykit that comprised an extended front spoiler, deeper side-skirts and a deeper rear apron. Inside, the QV featured sculpted sports seats whereas, mechanically, it was fitted with an up-rated version of the 3-Litre V6 12-valve engine (147 kW vs 132 kW (179 PS; 177 hp) for the standard car) and adjustable damper settings. This was the only export 164 available with a manual transmission (e.g. in Australia). From 1992, this model was the powered by the new 24-valve V6 engine.

Okay, as per Poohbah & V AR 164, I'm claiming my 92 model as a Quadrifoglio Verde! It has the skirts, front chin spoiler & adjustable dampers.
Again, thanks for the info.

I would suggest that in this case Wikipedia is wrong.....as others have said the Australian 12-valve manual cars were the 164Q.  Not a QV.

Plus manual 164's were absolutely sold in other parts of the world.  Here is an old ad for one in the Alfabb (this is also a Q but manuals were sold in other configurations):

Ehh there has always been debate whether they are called a Q or QV. It's like saying it's called a one six four or one sixty four. Much the same, only main diff is 12v vs 24v. That link you posted Aggie is a 24v and should really be called a QV.
