Title: Mild computer tune for very early 156
Post by: Alfabmwjagford on April 25, 2019, 10:56:29 AM
Hi all. I am new here. I am looking for a 10 to 15% gain in performance via computer tune. My regular pro that did my download on my BMW, Focus and Kuga had problems in the ID of the particular computer processor in my 1998 156. He did not pull it out, just connected his computer software up and then questioned his suppliers in Europe. Apparently not a problem in the later (JTS) models. Any suggestions, knowledge or experience in this area out there in Alfa land.

I recall reading somewhere that you can't, or it is really difficult, to remap the ECU on the older series 1 cars (maybe to do with Canbus not being used til later cars?).

However, it was something I briefly considered a while back for my Series 1 V6 and I found a mob called Powerchip which claimed it could get about a 10% power uplift  for my car for $1000 - though I'm not sure if it is still available.

Also seems to be a company in Victoria claiming it can do it for all series one cars (link below). Don't know anything about them other than what is on their website, but the gains seem pretty minimal (5-8%) so probably not worth it. Really only appears worthwhile if you have a turbo or turbodiesel engine.

Just found another mob in Oz offering remaps on early 156s - but only for V6 and diesels, so it would seem the petrol four pots are unsuitable.

And really doesn't seem worth it for the V6 - only a 5% increase in HP  to 200hp and 9% more torque. The diesels however do get a big lift (+30hp +80Nm)

unless its a dyno tune\remap you are wasting your money
