I always find car-reunion stories interesting - memory versus actuality. And I like that it is such an honest appraisal, the good and the not so good.
Watching the car on the road it didn't look very settled. Could explain his comments a bit not be7ng so sweet to drive as he expected. Perhaps some tired bushes under there.
Didn't look like it needed a full resto though, he mentioned the owner was heading that way.
I really relate to that story. I bought my 1st Alfa ( also a series 2 1750 )in 1975. I'd missed a few good cars in Melbourne so decided to go to Sydney. I didn't know to much about mechanicals, so took my mate Pepe who was racing Austin Healey Ford engined sprites at the time. Got on a plane Friday night after work ( 1st time on an aeroplane) and flew to Sydney. I can still remember us two skinny kids sitting in the plane and half way down the runway he said to me:" this is about as fast as the sprite went on the front straight at Calder" . I was glad to complete take off.
We arrived in Sydney caught a Taxi to Paddington to inspect the car . Wasn't quite as good as represented in the add but bought it anyway, I was pretty committed. I gave the owner a bank cheque for half the purchase price and a personal cheque for the balance . You wouldn't want to try that these days. He wasn't to keen on the personal cheque and said if it bounced on Monday morning he would report the car as stolen. I didn't care I just wanted the car. We started driving just on dusk . I had two speeding fines by the time we got to Goulburn so I decided to let Pepe drive for a while . After crossing the border back into Victoria I thought it would be a good idea to get off the Hume Highway. My lasting memory of that drive was driving through beautiful fast touring roads between Wangaratta and Mansfield with the sun coming up, humming along at about 75mph, no one else around for miles . I was hooked for life. I have always have an Alfa in the driveway ever since.

Nice story Paul. Many of us can picture you cruising down those roads around Wang. Great times :).
