Hi all ..... just wondering if anyone knows which Alfa had a 1.8 engine with SOLEX downdraft carby.
BUMP?
Rigi,
Not sure that any 1.8's that came to Australia had a single down draft carby. I presumed all ours we dual side draft.
Some of the Giulia TI's etc. had a single carby but not any 1.8's that I can recall. That would put it in the "Alfetta" range of cars.
Any pics you can post? That may help with the identification. Is the sump a 105 sump (fan shaped front edge) or a more rectangular shape, as per 116 range?
My guess would be an import of some type (I am sure in the Alfa world there was a lower spec engine available).
Cheers,
Paul.
I've been racking my brain about this and I can't recall any 1.8 engines with a single downdraft. Maybe a commercial application overseas but I can't recall any car.
Thanks for the thoughts so far .... it has been wrapped in plastic for quite a while probably because it has no sump .... I'll post a photo when I pull it out of the bowels of the container and post the engine number also - cheers Richard
Rigi,
Is the 1.8 written on the wrapping or something?
Just had a thought and it would make sense, could it be 1.3 ?
Is it clearly 1.8?
Cheers.

Boxer(Flat four)
(Unlikely, but did come with a choice of carbs)

Very true. We're assuming Nord...
Hi Rigi
From what I can gather the 1300 Giulia in LHD only used the solex down draught carburettor.
Refer to the following wiki link

RHD 1300 TI in Aus too!
Well of course all 101 series 1600 Normale's had a single downdraft carb and there's plenty of them still running around. But they were 1570cc engines, not 1779cc.
Well the answer is ..... we have verified from the engine number that the engine came from a 1750 and therefore someone with a 1300 /1600 decided that they wanted an 'original look' by fitting the Solex to it .... go figure ... looks over gagging the performance of the 1750 engine :(
sounds to me like a US motor they quite a few of those for pollution reasons

No, US cars have SPICA injection.
Interesting choice made by the previous owner!
no prior to 1972 they had double barrell carb and normal exhaust ie no headers
According to my parts book, this carburetor was used on spider engines up to 1315.45854,but doesn't give an engine number(spider normale) for when Alfa began using the Solex C35 APAI-G on spiders.Again, according to this parts book(11/61)the smaller carburetors,Solex C.32 BI,C.32 BIC,C.32 PBIC,and 32 PAIAT were used on Berlinas',T.I.s',and sprints.BUT,over forty years ago I had a 56' spider that had a one-piece cast iron exhaust manifold, and "I think" a small carburetor, but I'm not sure.I hope someone chimes in.

Just to keep the record straight and not trying to sound like a smart arse, all US market 1750's used SPICA. From mid-'68. The last US market Alfa's with carbies were the 1600's.
well no your probably right but i have seen spiders US with double barrel carb
duetto but only US ones
Giulia 1300 TI (105.39) 1965-1972; 200,000 built. Slightly nicer version of the 1300 Berlina, now with five-speed. Highest production numbers by far. Still two headlights, Spartan interior, and single carb as on 1300 Berlina, but slightly better performance with 82 HP. 4.56 rear axle. Introduced three-spoke black plastic steering wheel. Also in RHD form with different tipo number (105.40).
aggie you are 100 % correct
Ok Guys
The only way to get to the bottom of this is to verify via the engine number. If it is still buried at the back of the container, then we can only speculate.
cheers

Guys
Further to me earlier post, Rigi has identified that the engine is definitely a 1750 (refer to post dated 28 Aug 2017). Apologies for any confusion.
cheers
