Title: The silver105 in for some work !
Post by: Silver105 on May 08, 2017, 10:10:39 PM
Hello all,

Just thought I would share a post about my 105. I paid too much for her at the time and didn't really know what I should have been looking for outside of the usual a rust issues, bog patch up jobs and and I thought I had a good one as I had complete photos of the resto. But then going to spectacollo you quickly notice all the imperfections. So after searching for a good panel shop for some time, I have found someone I thought I would share as he is a mad Alfisti and does some amazing work.

Vito at Polo Body Works in Braeside Victoria. Check them out of Facebook and you'll see the show cars custom cars he has done and also the ongoing restoration of his own 73 105 GTV. Check out the blue 105, that is Vito's and looks amazing.

This is the before shots and I'll post some progress shots in due course as she is getting complete respray after fixing some panels and getting a facelift .

Hi Silver105
Looking good, just one observation concerning the shut line gap on the RHS rear (boot and guard) in photo 3, being addressed as part of the work or is just my imagination.
Title: Re: The silver105 in for some work !
Post by: Silver105 on August 01, 2017, 08:48:15 PM
Yes good spot. Actually the boot and both rear quarter panels need a fair bit of work as the boot is just very tight after the rear panel work done previously. I'll post some progress shots as I think it is going to be interesting to make it perfect.

Cheers
John

I am sure Vito should be able to rectify, maybe it's only a simple boot alignment or then again the need to partially detach rear guard align and re-attach (hopefully not the latter as this might be fairly involved). From lower picture (image8 eight), the shut line gap looks good (puzzling to say the least)
Title: Re: The silver105 in for some work !

Update, figured out why the boot fit was not great, wasn't from a 74 2000 GTV, I think much early model and made to fit. Explains why I have photos of the previous owner doing the metal work to reset the boot badge and why it just sat totally out of alignment. Anyway, feedback from Vito is the doors are in great condition, no rust and most of the panels look really good. A little bit of surface rust on the front nose cone, and a little too much filler in the finishing.

He said the previous owner did all the hard work cutting out all the rust in the usual places and the metal work looks good, but then just did a very poor job on the finishing. Just did not look after the detail and the quality of the finish is what let it down .... Anyway, all I need at the moment is new boot lid from Classic Alfa, some chrome window trim you can buy in a roll and trying to find a new instrument binnacle for a 74 2000 GTV... mine is a little warped.

Cheers
John

Hi Silver105
Good news about the cause of the boot alignment problem. Repairs to body panels are progressing well and it won't be long before she is ready for paint. Have you decided on the paint finish being either acrylic or 2 pack.

I'm pretty sure we're going with Dulux 2 pack but we have not had that discussion yet ? What would you recommend ?

I resprayed my Alfetta GTV in acrylic, basically because I did it at home and was the OEM paint used back in the 80's. However would have preferred 2 pack oven baked finish because of durability and long term finish capability (resist to sun damage). I have included photo's of the finish product taken after the respray job.

Looks pretty good for doing it at home.... nice colour. I love Alfettas with a set of Simmons... been trying to convince a mate of mine with a white Alfetta GTV6 to put a set of Gold Simmons on his....

Thanks John. Happy in the way the old girl turned out and is currently nearing completion of an 18 month refresh that has involved full body respray, refurbished dash and reupholster of tan leather Recaro interior. Over this time she has only been off the road for 4 months in total (respray),  as donors for dash and Recaro interior have been utilized.

Whoops small mistake rectified... it's Polo Body Works in Braeside Victoria where my car is having the cosmetic surgery not Polo Panels as there is a panel beater in Sydney called Polo Panels. Vito just pulled me up on my error !!! Anyway more photos to come. Cheers JJ

Hi Silver105
The body looks in fantastic condition and in considerably much better condition to the one in the first Youtube video attached. Points of interest are at
1.   At 1 min mark covers condition of car and fitment of rear section
2.   At 19 min mark covers the Surface preparation and the importance of Surfacer coat.
3.   At 23 min mark fabricate body panels and sills,
4.   At 27 min mark Alignment of hood panel.

A second video made by these guys covers various aspects of what to look out for when buying a GTV, in particular problematic areas such as front suspension sub frame cracking, battery acid corrosion and pitfalls of buying a donor car for using it for body panels.

Yes staying the same colour as the engine bay internals etc are not being really touched so it has to be the same silver !

Ok slow progress but here are some of the recent works. Correcting some of the lines from the previous resto metal work, got the correct boot lid for the model ( previous one was made to fit. It was for an earlier model 105 which is why it did not sit well enough. The boot was an issue so had to work on the lines to make it straight and sit correctly when shut. Moved to the front and also started on the nose which was all over the shop. Anyway lots more work to do but glad Vito is being so pedantic !

Hi Silver105
Those shut lines and gaps are looking spot on and I suppose the next step prior to paint is getting those body panels straight and aligned perfectly. The car should look brilliant when finished and I bet you can't wait to get her back on the road in the not too distant future.
Title: Re: The silver105 in for some work !
Post by: Silver105 on December 14, 2017, 11:39:52 AM
Yes the lines were important and getting those body panels straight is key. The metal work done previously was generally ok as in the car had no real rust but some surface rust, but it was just the lines and alignment were annoying and what i would look at every time I went into the garage ! Little things I didn't notice we are fixing along the way like the badges that were used were new repo's but they are not great, the colours are a little off and even things like rubbers around the headlights that fit into the chrome work I didn't have. The rear is what I'm most happy with. The rear taillight a had a gap between the lights and the metal work as the shape of the boot curve had been adjusted due to the metal work. So the photo with the lights correctly fitting the curve of the rear is great as before I could get a pencil behind the gap... So I think the outcome will be great when finished. Unfortunately won't make spectacolo this year but will hopefully have her on the road for a club ever before the end of Feb.  JJ

Simply lovely. In my opinion, cars like this look their best in 3 stages.
Order of excellence:
Bare metal.
Primer / undercoat
Paint.

Yours looks like it will nail all three. Very nice.

Title: The silver105 in for some work !
Post by: Silver105 on August 27, 2018, 09:49:35 PM
Yes that photo was taken by the wife... had to get the magnolia in the shot ! Actually both the fancy shots are from the boss!

No idea what she would be worth ...... the car that is, but have seen some recent cars for sale on Carsales over the six figures which is interesting. There was one for sale at classic throttle shop in Sydney series 2 1750 Silver with the burgundy interior which looked amazing and they wanted 132k. Not sure what it actually sold for but it did sell. Lovely car but not a series 1 so I thought that was optimistic ? Never thought these cars would get into that territory given there are a few of them still around but not looking at selling mine any time soon. Planning on driving mine and getting those bloody carbs tuned properly ! They're either too rich or too lean ? Must have an issue with the float ?  Cheers JJ

I too liked the "magnolia photo".

They always seem to me a thing of beauty in how they flower despite torture (the shape, the sparseness, the extremes of season they can endure). So a good metaphorical companion to the car's journey.

Thank you for the wonderful shared narrative through your restoration.

Many did ask where the Silver 1750 S2,,,,$132,000 went to.
Was a lot of discussion about the Red Leather interior.
