Title: GTV prices on the up!
Post by: poohbah on February 06, 2017, 02:18:10 PM
Dropped my 156 in for a service today, and the first thing my Alfa guy said to me was - "You know GTV prices are on the way up".

So I did a quick check, and it seems my cunning plan to eventually recoup my "investment" in my 81 GTV via increasing rarity might actually have some legs.

I'll admit it wasn't a comprehensive search - but there are no GTVs registered and running available for less than high-$9k on Carsales or gumtree. (best bargain I could find was this little beauty in Frankston http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/frankston-south/cars-vans-utes/1976-alfa-romeo-alfetta-coupe/1137859676 (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/frankston-south/cars-vans-utes/1976-alfa-romeo-alfetta-coupe/1137859676)

A year or so ago you could still find licensed and running in reasonable nick (ie straight, limited rust, but needing general TLC) for half that.

Long may the trend continue!

Only a matter of time really.
What other RWD coupe with such pedigree can you get for under 20K?
The Alfetta's are one of the last of the affordable classics (bar the lotus esprit and Lancia Montecarlo).
In my search the Alfetta's still running with reg have had most of their issues sorted.

That blue GT is very clean from the photos... i'd still offer him 5 though. ;)

I think the trick may be to advertise when you know there are hardly any others on the market, and temporarily pull  from sale if there are quite a few (unless the sale is urgent obviously). Seems to me that availability ebbs and flows.

Definately good news! Now time to wait for the 160 series cars to do the same....

Interestingly enough, one of the other guys in the workshop today said prices for 75s were really going north due to scarcity.

I think the best of the cars out there always command a pretty good price...

Told a mate to call about the car asap... It looked a ripper.
He was told to join the queue of inquiry.
It sold for full price in a flash.
  Bargain..!

Can't say I'm surprised. It did look sweet.

There are also a couple of unregistered GTVs available unregistered that look really straight for between $4-7k, but its hard to tell how much you would need to spend to get them registered again without seeing them in the flesh.

The blue Alfetta GT in Frankston belonged to a good friend of mine for 15 years and it was the best one I have seen. It has gone to an Alfa lover which was key to the final decision as it had NO rust (repaired with metal whenever it reared it ugly head), it was maintained properly, loved always garaged, if there was space in my garage it would be there right now (Bugger!).

I hope the new owner lavishes the same love and attention on it and enjoys his purchase. If anyone gets the opportunity to purchase a car like this please weigh up is it the vehicle I want to own or the one I want to pay for, it makes the decision much easier to live with.

Congrats to the new owner of the blue car. And to the previous owner for looking after it with that amount of care. These are great cars, $9750 for a really good one is a bargain. In 5 years they'll be worth $20k plus. Easy.

I hope you are right, if I ever decide to sell mine maybe I'll get back some of the money I've put into it!  :'(

Prices may go down if we flood the market, best we hang on to them.

Agreed Fetta. Prices still have a long way to go before I will be able to get back what I have tipped in so far.

Thanks for that, there's still some more work to do but it's getting there.  :)
