Post by: nnelson on January 10, 2017, 03:27:26 PM
Can anyone help diagnose what might be causing this noise?

Drive the car and see what doesn't work or feels / seems iffy.  Could be power steering pump or aircon compressor.  Given its the middle of summer its probably the air con!!!!!

Water pump bearing?  Alternator?  Does the pitch of the noise rise and fall in harmony with engine revs?

Hard to hear...  Doesn't seem to have that irregular grinding "rocks in the tumble dryer" sound which indeed signals a disintegrating water pump bearing.  Can't say my 2.2 ever chewed up this bearing, but my 1750 did.

From what I can hear it seems more likely to be alternator / fan.  That'd be cheaper to fix.  Seek professional advice.
