Title: New 156 gta
Post by: 105greg on December 15, 2016, 09:36:13 PM
Just picked up my new gta.  Had to get a few things done for roadworthy from previous owner.  While it was in I asked for a oil change and specified 10w /60. The dick so called European specialist has put in magnatec 15w/40.   $191.   What do you reckon on this oil for my v6. Cheers

I'd chat to the Mechanic and get him to put in some Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge 10w/60.  $191 for magnatec is just crazy.
These engines are amazing, the wrong oil is just not worth it, especially if it's going to get pushed a bit.

$48 per litre?

Was that just for the oil or including filter and service?

Be clear on what you mean please.

mick.

Oil   Plus filter change.     He charged previous owner $810. For new rear wheel bearing and cv boot.  And fix airbag light which is not fixed.

Ok, so his price was very reasonable. $810 sounds about right for the other stuff too.

Airbag light probably was fixed. If you know these cars, you'll know that this is a common fault caused by moving the seats whilst the ignition is on, or knocking the curtain airbag connectors in the R/H side of the boot compartment. So the light probably came back on when the fault code re-appeared. I'm sure if you told him he would happily reset it for you again for free, but no you would rather slag the mechanic publicly first.

Sounds like you are paying out on someone who may not necessarily deserve it, and if you are one of those people, I suggest you should find somewhere else to vent your anger, because your post is not constructive or contributing to the forum, I will be requesting it is deleted.

Don't just come on here to stir up shit by slagging some anonymous mechanic who can't defend themselves because you are telling a one sided story.

Mick.

I haven't mentioned anyone and don't intend to.   My question is do I drain the oil and put in new or put up with it

No, you also paid out on the shop.   Mick is right.

I would go with 10w60 Penrite 10 Tenths or 20w60 Penrite Racing PAO.  I personally prefer Penrite over Castrol.
60 keeps the pressure up if you happen to do some spirited driving.

Bearings , cv boot agreed

Airbag light ? This was for rego  and knocked back because it was on . Still passed it even though it was knocked back because it was on . Not fixed.  Passed.  Doesn't worry me !

Slagging a mechanic. ?
Absolutely anonymous
Remain so

First point.
Oil change       Wrong oil.       Now I have to spend same again for correct oil.    Would you have that oil in your car?

Not stirring stating facts.  Discussing
Etc.

That's what forums are for.

Staying on topic, 10w40 was the Alfa spec, Selenia even.  But most have switched to 10w60.
Don't worry, stay with 15w40 for now and do a change at 5000km with what you want.
Enjoy your GTA.

Hi Neil, I don't think 10w40 was the Alfa spec for the GTA, 10w60 Selenia was recommended. I use Penrite 15W50 racing in my GTA as it is a full PAO synthetic, superior to the Selenia in every way and 60 is too thick these days with modern oils being more capable. To the OP, it's not going to hurt as long as, and previously mentioned, you dump it after 5k and put something better in. Enjoy your GTA, good score as there aren't many around these days!

Thanks 17 fitty.    So happy with it.   It's been neglected but under a week I have it sparkling.   Radio intermittent.  Forum advice fixed that.     More to do but what a car.    Coming back from pick up. Gave it to it on the ramp to highway and oh my god.   What an effortless beast.   Best thing will plod along in sixth gear At 60 k. And doesn't mind.     Beautiful what a long term keeper and such an awesome car for the $.  Look up Datsun 120 y and see how much they are going for.  Seriously don't get it.   Thanks to all and Alfa Xmas.

Nice looking 156 Greg, do you ever get down to Brisbane much? I have a small posse of young and old GTA owners in the area who are usually on for a meet up

My understanding of the 10w60 oil is it was a bandaid fix to stop them using oil past the rings. I also read that it must be checked weekly on these cars as they tend to use it. Last oil change I shelled out for the 10w60 but it still uses a lot of oil, needs to be topped up weekly. I'm ok with this but next change I will be looking at going back to a more regular 40 weight and keep regularly checking it. If the 60 weight doesn't achieve purpose I don't really see the point of running the overly thick stuff. Realistically I think Alfa switched to 60 weight to try and get the cars to the prescribed (15000km?) service intervals and stop having to warranty blown up engines. Mine would be bone dry by that stage, even with the thick stuff!
Cheers

Funnily enough I have now done about 1000 km and the engine has done 165000km. And it hasn't used a drop.
