I have a 3.2L V6 (petrol) manual 2009 Spyder that managed to destroy its clutch+flywheel yesterday. I've been quoted $2900 just for the Dual Mass Flywheel as a new part, or $1500 for a Single Mass replacement.
I've googled around to learn about the difference and I have conflicting advice from people about whether or not a) I'll notice a dramatic difference when driving and b) potential longer term effects on the gearbox and drivetrain.
My understanding is that an SMF will be "rougher" at lower revs but given that I'm not driving a diesel, the effect will be relatively minimal, particularly if the new clutch is correctly mated to the new SMF properly.
The difference in repair is approximately $1500 which is reasonably substantial on top of the labor and other parts (eg slave cylinder + thrust bearing, clutch kit and labor).
What do people recommend and/or what has happened in their experience?
I was quoted the about same price while ago for a DMF from a well known Alfa dealer and I had to wait about a month for it to arrive from Italy.I ended up ordering one from UK, delivered in 3 days 3 times cheaper($2000-$700).12000 km's after no worries at all.
