Title: WTB Race harness to suit Giulia Super and Helmet
Post by: AikenDrum105 on August 15, 2012, 11:58:50 AM
Hi folks -

starting to collect a few bits and pieces to get the Super sprint-worthy,  if anyone has a harness (or pair)  still reasonably in date (longer reach for boot / rear parcel mount)  and / or a helmet,  drop me a pm !

Cheers,

Scott.

I would not recommend buying a second-hand helmet, ever.  Even a small knock (like being dropped on the ground from waist height) can render them useless, and you'll never know how it was treated in its past life.

Helmets are cheap compared to a head injury.

I didn't know that - wow.  I've borrowed helmets countless times over the years too...

Thanks Sheldon.

agree 110% with sheldon. even a hailine fracture renders them useless.
buy the best you can afford, as your head is not replacable.

Thanks scuzzy, and AikenDrum105 it's very important to have your own helmet and to NEVER lend it to anyone, unless you can see what they're doing with it at all times.

Helmets do two things.  The hard outside layer spreads the load, so as scuzzy says it cannot be compromised at all.  But more importantly the inner foam layer compresses in an impact so your brain has critical time and space to not impact with your skull.  The problem is that this foam layer can only compress once.  Once it's done it's job, it's trash.  The example I gave above, of a helmet dropped from waist height, 99 times out of 100 it would not compromise the helmet, but the only way to know for sure is to have it x-rayed.  For a $1000 helmet it might be worth it.  For a $200 one, just buy a new one.

And they're only any good for 5 years anyway (materials degrade over time, and you want your helmet to be in tip-top shape).  As scuzzy says, get the best you can afford.

Aldi had some motorbike helmets last week for $70 or $80, which would be safer than 2nd hand.

They met Aust Standards but as Sheldon alluded to, how much is your head worth?
