Title: 1984 GTV passenger side window winder drum
Post by: michaeljc on January 30, 2016, 04:17:27 PM
Windows operated smooth as silk but still one of the cable ends broke through the 1980s plastic and left me with a window stuck down.

Well a drill bit and a cable tie has fixed it back to working order but with this being my first time fix of the mechanism I found that my pre-wind of the cable in the drum was maybe 1 turn off .... leaving me with a window that goes all the way up, but only 3/4 of the way down.

Because it is a fair pain to fiddle with this setup ... My preference when pulling the door card back off and fiddling with the cables and the drum again is to replace it with a winder drum that is in good condition, rather than my cable tie modified unit (although it seems to operate perfectly).

My question is: Can I get new replacement winder drums from anywhere?

If you're going through the pain of working on the cable system I would recommend replacing the entire system while you're at it.
Everything  is  available new!
Bunnings sells (for a few dollars in the sliding screen door section) the same size wheels both in nylon and in stainless steel with a built in ball bearing instead of a bush. I think they were about $6 ea when I rebuilt mine 4yrs ago with the nylon wheels.
They also have suitable steel cable to replace the old usually kinked and freying cable.
And for cable end crimps. Your local fishing place (BCF..) sell the crimps for making steel trace lines for the big fish ;) about $8 for a pack of 50. So plenty to have a few practice goes.
Making this a once in a life time job. It should last another 30-40 years.

Thanks to all.

I will replace all of that gear (Bunnings etc) when I get the new window wiper rubber from EB spares. i.e. attack the door all at once = minimise wear to plastic bits when removing door card
