Title: GTV6 Valve Seals
Post by: shane wescott on August 18, 2012, 10:42:53 PM
Hi Guys

Just a question and a theory here.

I have checked the compression on my engine recently and found that all pots were around 160 give or take 5psi.

I dont have any pressurisation of the internals when I remove the oil cap with the engine running.

All this goes to tell me that my rings and compression is probably o.k.

But given all of that, when my car sits for a couple of weeks (as it does most of the time), and then it is started there appears to me a n amount of oil inside the chambers needing to be burnt as smoke pours out.

On top of this the plugs regularly clog and they appear oily when removed.

Is it possible that leaking seals in the top end somewhere is letting oil drain back into the cylinders. My theory is that if a valve seal maybe is worn, oil drains down  and if the valve is open a little this oil drains into the piston area and therefore creates the startup smoke.

So is this possible/likely, any other suggestions as to why oil builds up over time and then get burnt out when the Beast finally gets started.
Thanks in advance.

Shane

The 12 valve V6's are known to wear their exhaust valve guides quite badly.
I'd guess that the valve stem seals would be pretty flogged out, too.
