Congrats on the purchase Colin, Looking forward to seeing the progress on this.
You mentioned having to run a distributor.. that torque reaction mount looks like an ideal place to mount the dizzy parallel with the crank with a small belt off the front of the cam 😉
Would give good access in-situ as well!
Ben
Thanks, yea exactly what I was thinking re distributor! However new tarmac Rally rules for released last night, and plans have changed....
Hi Colin
Looks like a very interesting project, facing several challenges along the way, such as incorporating distributor, gear selection and engine mounts, smaller alternator, exhaust and intake systems. Can't wait to see the end result, incorporating the busso v6 engine plant, with the expected performance being out of this world. Is your plan strictly to only rally the car or are you planning to have it road registered as well?
Love it Colin, will be watching!
Yea it's a rally car, so needs to be have registration, but don't think it'll be too much of a daily driver!

And yes, everything is always easier with the right friends . . . . ::)
AWESOME- great grass roots suck it and see--was the existing box Lancia?
Yea box and engine straight out of a beta, so a little small for what we were planing on!

Not the only person doing this in AU.... Not sure if it ever had a Lancia engine in it.
But it had this ugly lump in it:
Can you guess...
;)
nice! looks to be a hawk car also, who's is it?
next video the roll cage continues
https://youtu.be/NDLYuMADmnE (https://youtu.be/NDLYuMADmnE)
Yes, a Hawk car. Not mine unfortunately... A local collector. One of about 60 odd cars he owns.
Finished fabricating the new engine mounts and now doing the new suspension pickup points (to cope with the track of the Alfa drive line). The gearshift.... Lot of head scratching atm: but forming a plan.
Cool! yea i've been looking at the gearshift also, my current plan is to machine a new top plate for the gear shift mechanism on top of the gbox, so i can spin it around 90 deg and have the cables coming in from the other direction, rather than add additional linkages. unfortunately there is a missing spline in the selector fork which will need to be relieved and a new hole for the locating pin drilled, and that shaft looks very very hard
Hi Colin and Luke
Both are amazing builds incorporating the 3.2 litre Busso V6 engine transplants and thanks for sharing in the journey. Not sure if you have seen this post on the AlfaBB (15 Pages), which is a similar build and includes the gearbox and associated shifter options/mods;

Happy New Year
bonno
Yes, I remember following his amazing build. He ended up with a Toyota MR2 box in it as he could not get the Alfa boxes to hold together. He died a couple of years ago... there were no details how.
The engine and gearbox I am using is from a 916 GTV with a cable shifter... similar box, different shift mechanism. I have a bit of a plan.
Luke, ever feel like Dr Frankenstein ? ;)
;D ;D ;D

Thank God, a proper cage install!
Sorry, I have just seen SO many Alfa Track cars up here that have the lower forward mount of the cage to a pad on the floor instead of the sill area. Makes me cringe every time I picture one sliding of the track into the muddy infield, catching on the grass, flipping up and come crashing down on its roof, punching the mounting pad clean through the flimsy 40 year old floor.
Rant off. :)

Hi guys, next video, sorting out the front wheel drive gearbox linkage to work in the stratos.
https://youtu.be/jiwj1x3K-hM (https://youtu.be/jiwj1x3K-hM)
I stayed with the standard linkage, but had new long cables made to run behind and under the engine... There was going to be a fair bit going on in front (cooling pipes and hoses etc).
Some Black magic including sacrificing a few black cockerels to make the 916 shifter work well...
Plus: an eye watering $800 bill to make the cables!!!!!
Who did you get to make up the cables, looks like they used the original factory end fittings?
Hi Colin, try Retro Spares, Eltham and Flexible Drive, Kensington. The latter once made up a 105 tacho cable for me many years ago.
Hi Colin, I just wanted to say that I am loving your work!
I am a designer not an engineer, and I am really developing an appreciation for the creative/problem solving element of your engineering work as well as the technical aspects.
Cheers,
Al.
Cheers Al, glad your enjoying it, and don't worry there is no shortages of problems to be solved in this project!, I've managed to engineer myself into a pretty big hole with the driveshaft situation, so that should show up in the next few videos.
Thanks John, I'd actually already sent Flexible drive an e-mail, nothing back yet, might try and ring them tomorrow, looks like retro spares just sell already manufactured cables, but given they are about 100m from my house I'll give them a try also!
QuoteWho did you get to make up the cables
From memory, it was Flexible Drive. Good to deal with... They did warn me it would not be cheap!
My drives were a challenge: mixture of Lancia Beta bearings, Alfa 916 flanges and Nissan stud pattern. :o
And yes, they reused as many parts as they could.
Next video i tackle a drive shaft issue i've got myself into, big thanks to Ben (105gta) for helping me with some info and sending me down an engine mount

Thanks mate, glad your enjoying them!
So I totally forgot you need an alternator and the original one on the engine didn't fit, so this episode i tackle the that situation on the Stratos Tarmac Rally car
Bit of a wheel bearing issue in this episode

https://youtu.be/aMErXSMOOlk (https://youtu.be/aMErXSMOOlk)
Amazing Colin, just caught up and it looks and sounds stunning. Can't wait to see it in the metal.
thanks mate, yea loving the sound! I'm sure we'll bring it along to a sprint meet, the old man is hanging for a drive as you can imagine
Inspiring! Car seemed to enjoy Winton. All ok? How many laps did you get in?
Curious to understand "a couple of mil toe-in" at the front. Is that setting to dial in a bit of initial turn-in understeer? Do you reckon the car will be very pointy given the short wheel base/heavy rear end mass bias?
Yea it went well around Winton, Got 4 Sessions in but it was a very strange day weather wise, Super Hot and Humid and Rained every couple of hours, so kept alternating between Wet and Dry track every session, which made suspension tuning difficult, had a few issues, main one was some clearance between the sump and the oil cooler, i hadn't noticed a larger cooling Fin on the 3.2 sump, that's fixed now
the small amount of toe in is more about stability and helping the car to track properly, and the car was actually tracked pretty well. It's got epic turn in and loves a partial brake or lift-off Over steer, as you say a combination of short wheel base and mid engine. The upside of the short wheel base, is though it does love an OS, it is very easy to catch and bring back in line.
The dampers are 3 way adjustable, so i'll see if i can dial out a bit of the Lift off oversteer,

Harden up.
But seriously, awesome build, and brilliant and inspiring videos. And very amusing. Car looks amazing, can't wait to see it.
Interestingly, I watched a vid the other night, a sort of "men and their garages" sort of thing. This chap had a Stratos rep with a 24V Busso (the LB STR) and a Ferrari F50, Carrera GT, Muira, Ferrari 250GTE, 812, and some others, and they all get driven hard. When asked which one car he'd keep if he had to, within a heartbeat he said "oh, the Stratos, no question".
Just amazing Colin. Another great example of what an Aussie bloke can achieve in his shed
Tarmac rallying only?
Can the rear ride height be reduced a tad without impacting on roll centre too much - or would that impact on aero balance too much?
QuoteHarden up.
Good point! Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed the vids

Yea as you lower the rear the Rear Roll Centre location becomes more and more of a problem, The McPherson Strut rear is definitely not the best part of this car, it's got a super low CG anyway.
They did track a few of them back in the day, but I think you loose the advantages the small wheelbase gives you on a track, it really was designed from the ground up as a rally car

Love it. Great highlights package Colin, it's been fun following the build. Well done.
Congratulations on an amazing, inspiring project!
Like the others, I look forward to seeing in the 'flesh'.

Hi Colin,
Great work on the uprights. Nice to see they appear relatively hollow. What are they off? Or your creation? Light?
The roll axis is certainly steep! Not helped by the relatively short wheelbase - and highish rear COG? No wonder it's a bit of a handful.
Looking forward to outcome of next test session.
Regards,
Colin.
Thanks Colin, yea uprights where my design, based of the original hawk ones, but upgraded to take the bigger bearing of the alfa drive shafts, also changed to bottom mount layout. They were pretty light as they are fabricated, so lots of hollow sections
. Here's the video of making them
https://youtu.be/NNoDYC5KLGw (https://youtu.be/NNoDYC5KLGw)
Yea I think the original hawk rear upright design was done more for packaging, rather than dynamics, will certainly be interesting to try out the changes
