In the above photo there are the two lower exhaust pipes, can anyone explain what the third smaller pipe is for?

More than likely it the pipe from an external wastegate. The Ferrari F40 had the same thing, that's why they have 3 exhaust pipes, with the central 1 being smaller than the 2 main pipes.

Yes it is the exhaust side wastegate...the rear engine cars have the separate exhaust "extra pipe" pipe as the distance is too short to be run into the main pipe(s) like on front engine turbo cars. This separate piping is done in racing applications and not typical of a road car.

Here is an extreme version but shows why it's necessary due to short length.

Below it pic 2 shows the wastegate pipe being integrated on a longer exhaust pipe.

The third shows this "extra pipe" in F1 application.

PS The pic I posted earlier isn't a 4C as you know it, it is quite an extreme body over a lengthened chassis with Alfa 1750cc 8200rpm & 600bhp and mounted north/south.
PSS In this case the exhaust on the left is normal exhaust, the right one is heat evacuator from the exhaust collector on left of the motor. But still the small top exhaust is the wastegate exhaust.

True Garbaldi (BTW thanks for freeing Sicily) and if you didn't understand the start of the video that showed them pointing to the 155 DTM well he, Marco Gramenzi is also the owner of that beast! FYI those that don't know, it remains to this day the only non German manufacturer to win the title ever. Remember that.

This man, Marco Gramenzi, has had built that 4C as a one off...

If Alfa Romeo aren't actually providing any legitimate technical involement, how are they actually involved as anything other than a sponsor?
McLaren are IN F1.
Ferrari are IN F1.
Renault are IN F1.
BMW (I think BMW are) and Mercedes Benz are IN F1.
Alfa Romeo won't be IN F1, it's just avertising.

Ferrari and Alfa are both own by Fiat. It's hard to expect Italians will create a competition for themselves. I may imagine Alfa would be some sort of Toro Rosso for Ferrari.

Btw, when Alfa 8C was launched rumours were saying it could've been faster, but ... Ferrari said no and "slowed" it down.

Of course this often happens in a family, the biggest (and not the eldest) gets their way...like this project by Pininfarina for a wealthy businessman using the Ferrari F430 Scuderia underpinnings, to make a modern Lancia Stratos...Ferrari were none too pleased...

If recall the story correctly, Fez also made sure the Maserati MC12 was a shade slower than the Enzo, even though they were almost the same car underneath.
