Thanks Paul.  Do you know the name of any of the more modern rustproofing products you recommend?  I don't mind the smell of fisholene but wonder whether the newer products are an improvement?

I've been using a lanoline based spray for general spot use, but I was googling only last week and came across this:   http://www.rust.co.uk/rust-converters.cfm    'FE-123'

Haven't found a local supplier though.

This product would seem to tick all the boxes, if you can believe the blurb.   It's a penetrating rust converter so works on existing rust (within reason) and importantly doesn't require rinsing like most of the acidic converters I've seen on the market.  Excess product on non-rusted surfaces isn't a problem.  So it sounds like a great product for doing inaccessable cavities like sills and pillars on older cars.

Once this stuff has done its job, follow up with a cavity wax type protectant of your choice.  There are heaps of different products available.

Best of luck with the 1.8 Rowan. It looks like a ripper. One of my great regrets is selling the 1.8 I had years ago (let it go for $700 when I was young, stupid and broke and unable to afford a few repairs).

Cheers,

Brent

Just to update this, I finally got around to doing the work I planned for this car.  A few things still to go but it is going well.  Here is a link to photos for anyone interested.
