Flat dashboard restoration options

So my 1968 gtv faux wood flat dashboard isn't in the best shape. Top is actually pretty good, but the wooden part is fairly tatty (and deep down not a fan of the wood)

I should also mention that this car is far from excellent or original either.

What can I do to improve...
Remedy/improve the wood somehow?
Paint it black
Get it covered in something (who in Melb)

Have you thought about getting a new fibre glass dash and custom painting it or putting some different materials on it?

Took a pic at the 2010 Auto Italia of this mob "Prostitch". Only thing is they are in Sydney, might be worth a call tho'....

Was recommended to use Cel at https://designautointerior.wixsite.com/designauto by Monza Motors. Think they are more into seats and upholstery, but might be a good place to get advice. Or Monza?

There is a guy in Perth who does fibreglass ones and has them airbrushed in wood look like original>
  he has a face book page. They look very good!
