GTV6 expansion tank

Hi all,

In the process of perfecting the cooling system of my GV6 GP I have learnt one or 2 things that are worth sharing.

The original Alfa Romeo plastic molded expansion tank never handled the pressure generated by the cooling system.
My Alfa specialist repairer told me he replaced many in the 80's when the cars were under warranty.
I have just bought another new old stock original tank but I'm only expecting it to last 6 months. It is important to use the correct radiator cap with these, most cap manufacturers specify 13psi.

The ultimate solution it seems is a TIG welded aluminum tank available from the US (International Auto Parts).

Also a complete set of cooling hoses can be bought for the GTV6 at the moment from EB Spares UK.

Of course the perfect GTV6 cooling system starts with new head gaskets. Done that too!

Yes Alan, You are correct but i would just like to add a point about the new plastic tanks, While being sufficient for the street, if you plan on taking her to the track, the ally tank is the only way to go. The plastic used gets stress marks in it straight away and it expands a lot more than the original item. I have been through the process, get the ally tank.

Yes, expecting the new plastic tank to last is wishful thinking on my part.
I'm going to the US for a holiday in September. My wife's suitcase will have more clothes in it, mine an ally tank.

Thanks for your comments, its reassuring to hear about someone else who has experienced this problem!

I had one made here in sydney for comparble money to the IAP one and it looked better and it was made from heavier gauge alloy.

Got it from precision metalcraft in North Parramatta .. speak to Leon
Rust, nah that's not rust .... its iron oxide!!!

Hi Alan

Can I ask where you picked up your NOS tank as mine just developed a split! Only use it on the street- would like to stay with the plastic tank

Thanks

Hi RL

I got mine from The Italian Job in Oakleigh. I don't know of any other source in Australia.
A couple of U.S specialists list plastic replacement tanks but indicate 'out of stock' on their websites.
Maybe its like cooling system hoses, someone, somewhere in the world does a batch and they re-appear?

The tank I installed a few months ago is looking good at this stage, but it hasn't seen a hot summer yet.
I am curious to see if the factory tank cap makes a difference. The aftermarket cap that I had before that
had a slightly higher opening pressure.
