'80 GTV electronic ignition conversion

Bit ignorant in the matter, can the 2L with magnetti marelli distributor be converted to electronic ignition ? If so, how or who does the mod in Melbourne ? Many thanks

hi, i had a bosch high output ignition fitted to my 116. simple and quite cheap. all you need is a magna dizzy and coil, take it to Ignition Torque in bayswater with you old dizzy and they will make it fit. from memory it cost $180 for the work. i bought the right magna for $50, took out the dizzy and coil, then gave the rest away to a scrappy. the rally car has never misfired in its life. can't praise the job highly enough.

The later 116 (guilletta's post 1984) cars had electronic ignition as standard. Hugh Harrison at Monza Motors has them . He did the conversion on my car. In addition you ought to think about getting  a set of 105 cams. Two very sensible upgrades for a early Alfetta GTV. The ignition will make your car easy to start  and more reliable. The cams will make it more responsive  and rev more freely. Both greatly enhance the driving experience.
Might be a little more expensive the previous post , but easy to obtain & bolt on Alfa bits.

Paul, you're saying that an electronic ignition from a late 116 can be fitted to an '80 GTV, compared to a new magna-spark unit how does this rate performance / reliability  wise ? Cost of the transplant by Monza ?
Regarding 105 cams, where can they be sourced, installed and what dollar amount should I budget ?

Wessty, i seem to recall it is the single point injection model, it is a bosch dizzy.
give this guy a call, he is the bloke who did the mod for me.

Does this distributor come from the first body shape magna? I think I found the right distributor today in the wreckers.

Has anyone used the whole distributor from the magna? Looked like it may require a little machining but not too much.

I spoke to ignition torque and I have now got a distributor to use for this conversion. The distributor needed is from an 1985-1986 Mitsubishi magna fitted with a carburetor. Later carburetor magna distributors appear the same to me but I was told to use the 1985-1986 distributor I will try to find out why. Do not buy the distributor from a fuel injected magna, they are different. Fuel injected distributors have a four pin plug, carburetor distributors have only two wires coming from them.

I just had electronic conversion kit fitted to my Bosch distributor in 81 GTV, replacing the points. Kit was a Hot Spark I ordered in from the US, total cost about $100 after FX and shipping. If you can replace points, you can do it yourself. Just make sure you also replace the coil with one that doesn't have an external resistor. 

So far so good - and no more setting/replacing points!

I took the car for a drive today with the new distributor from Ignition Torque in it today. Car drives much better than with points or the Accuspark kit fitted.

If you want electronic ignition, this is the one to get.
