Alfa 156 V6

Hi all,

Finally got my hands on a 156 V6.

Driving it home today, the attached red warning message appeared.

I can't seem to find what it means in the manual.

Does anyone here know what it means?

Also, there appears to be a little bit of oil dripping on the road from the front right corner, is this a common issue and how can I find the source?

Finally, where can I locate the jack points? I have a hydraulic jack I'd like to use to get under the car.

2.  That warning light is for brake pad wear (broken lines outside the circle).  Check the pads but I'll bet the sensing wire is dislodged/broken.  Should be simple enough to put right.

A similar symbol with solid external lines and '!' inside the circle indicates either the park brake is engaged or brake fluid is low.   Another similar warning has 'ÁBS' inside indicating an ABS fault.

Thanks for the reply Beatle.

I'll take a look at the pads and calipers.

I ended up jacking the car up and noticed a bit of oil so did a more thorough look through the engine bay and found the attached.

Does anyone know if this is common for the V6 or what it might be?

It's at the back of the engine bay near the firewall - back left of the block/rocker cover.

Second pic is under the car around about the same area below.

Is it motor oil, or hydraulic oil from your power steering?

The wishbone bush in your second photo has probably been damaged by oil soaking it.

Oil leaks are common to every.single.internal.combustion.engine ever made

Give it a clean (degreaser, steam or light Gerni/karcher) and see what's actually leaking

If you have the correct amount of oil, water, hydraulic fluids etc. you're good to go

Oil prevents rust.... although it also degrades rubber parts
Don't stress


I'd be more inclined to check the fuel lines/hoses....


... and you need brakes, in a herd immunity kinda way. Check and renew (they get used up, it's normal)

Thanks everyone - on the topic of oil, what does everyone use?

I can see references to 10w-60. Is that correct?

I used Penrite 10 Tenths Premium 10W-60 after getting in trouble from BazzBazz for using HPR10 (10W50)...... ;)

Prior to the 156 I used HPR10 (10W50) in the GT and it was Penrites recommended oil'at the time.  But now they state 10W60 with 'no substitutes'.

A tad expensive for a daily driver and one 5L bottle isn't enough.  It's also harder to source than Castrol Edge Supercar 10W-60 (similar price), but I have a 'thing' about Castrol oils (completely baseless......)

I'd guess the marketing guys have decided that Alfa owners are all cashed up...
