Hello,

I am giving some thought to purchasing a 1988 ALFA ROMEO SPIDER Series 3. Can anyone please recommend a good workshop, preferably on the Gold Coast or south Brisbane who could undertake such a task?

Additionally if anyone has completed a simular conversion in the past I would be greatful for any additional information, for example. a rough idea of the price and time involved.

Cheers,

Barry Edmunds

I am not all that familiar with Alfa specialist workshops in Brisbane, other than Richard Anderson at Avanti who are, as far as I can recall, located not far from the Breakfast Creek Hotel. Richard is very well versed in Alfa Romeo, has a good range of spares and has built up some well engineered cars over the years. Anyone who can build a Giulia Super that took on and conquered the London-Sydney event in 93 and then took the same car to New Guinea for a rally and won the event must surely know enough to cope with a RHD conversion
Otherwise check with the Queensland club, sure they would be able to advise.
Good luck with your project.

Avanti has moved to Northgate just near the Northgate rd level crossing and yes he knows his stuff, he also built and campained a Monty at Classic Adelaide and won his class two years running. If anyone can can do a conversion or at least know who can, it would be Richard. Good luck

Richard at Avanti should be able to advise. Also check out Alfamotive and APF Motors. The Queensland AROCA website has a list of sponsors and supporters - which is a good starting point: http://www.aroca-qld.com/sponsors.php

Avanti at the moment is closed until some point in January as Richard is not well. So he has closed the shop and is taking a well deserved rest.

Old thread .. what happened

I take it the car you're considering buying is already here (Aust.)?

If not.. have you considered importing one from the UK that has already been converted (by authorised alfa agents) to RHD.  You can import any vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1989 without restriction (Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989) .  So, source a cheap UK car, have an AROCUK member check it out add RORO (A$2K) shipping, a bit more for Customs, AQIS.... it's still bound to be cheaper than a local LHD version, converted (perhaps, i dunno.. is it?)

I often look at the adds in the UK mags for Spiders with a degree of envy. Seems pretty easy to pick up a good, factory RHD car for not much money. I guess they were much more common over there and appear to valued much lower than here. If I was in the market for another Spider, I would definitely give it serious thought.
