Drivers door mirror locking position

As often happens the drivers door mirror was snapped at the base. I picked up a replacement in good condition and fitted it today only to find that when the mirror locks in position, the angle is so acute that even with the glass angled all the way out I'm looking at the side vent and rear quarter window.

Can the angle at which the mirror locks in position be adjusted? I'm soaking the fastening nut in WD40 to try loosen it and hopefully adjust the angle of the mirror.

Hi Anthony
Refer to another post on the subject of mirror adjustment (3 locking tabs  orientation)

Thanks Bono! Tried searching here and on AlfaBB without luck, so thanks for the link back to one of my original posts! LOL!

Hi Anth73,
There are 3 raised bumps on the base which locks into 3 recessed areas in the mirror section. The spring keeps them locked into their respective positions. They do snap off and you have to find an experienced welder to weld it back. Not easy as the cast alloy part is very hard to weld.

Could the replacement mirror that you picked up be from a LHD car? That may explained the acute angle or someone may have repaired it at the base and welded it up wrongly?

Yes, maybe it is actually a LHS base? You could compare it to my spares if that helps?

Anth73

Got the mirror locally from Monza Motors so seems strange for it to possibly be a LHD mirror. Were the part numbers stamped on the collar different for LHD and RHD mirrors?

Correct me if I am mistaken, but I can't see how there could be 2 different model mirrors for LHD and RHD cars and yes the LHS and RHS mirrors are different and not interchangeable. I suspect the orientation is fixed for whatever reason and is not adjustable/foldable as designed (refer to previous post).

Anth73

The mirror is complete and does fold. I have read that LHD and RHD mirrors are different re: they lock in different positions.

My mirror has the following numbers stamped on it:

- 31330 on the collar below the rear cover
- 0138694 on the collar below the mirror

They are different.  I had a problem with passenger side mirrors apparently from LHD cars.  I couldn't see anything out of them.  I can out of the RHD mirror now attached.

Hi Anth
Just checked the LHS mirror fitted to my Alfetta GTV and it corresponds to your P/N 31330 quoted in your post, refer to photo attached. I noticed that the photo in your initial post is RHS/DS mirror.  And thanks Rowan for confirming there is a difference between LHD and RHD cars.

Anth73

Photos of my driver's side mirror. Anyone able to check against their mirror? Hoping I wasn't mistakenly sold a LHD passenger mirror.

Wouldn't the mirror just face the wrong way if the base was turned 180 degrees?!

bonno

I think Sportiva has a point,  as if you look at the photos for 31330 of Anths and my post, red mirror is located on RHS/DS

Anth73

That is possible...I'm not yet able to undo the nut to see if the locking position is adjustable. If it is fixed for both the base and the mirror then the only explanation would be a LHD right side base attached to a RHD right side mirror or vice verse. Hence why Ai was interested to see what numbers are stamped on your mirrors where mine has 0138694.
