I need to replace the Bosch RE57 voltage regulator and I am wondering if I can use an RE55 instead?

Im finding there are plenty more RE55s available online for a good price ...

Can anyone tell me the difference?

From another forum (google)

RE55 - 14.2v up to 60A
RE57 - same but with three pins, 14.2v up to 60A, third pin is an earth.

Google is my friend, I have no idea if any of this is true, ask a sparky (Bazz!!)

As an aside, why not use a newer/refurbished alternator with a built in reg?
