Hi everyone,
Long time admirer of the 159 and Brera and finally going to take the plunge looking for a 2009+ model of either type. My question is which engine to choose? I have been told the best engine choice for a newby is probably either the 2.4D or the 1750 ti. Any advice would be most welcome.  :)

Hey mate,

You won't regret buying one. They are a fantastic car and are one of the best looking Alfa's imo. Plus are great to drive.

I bought a 2.4 jtdm a few months ago and so far I really enjoy it. Plenty of power with great economy for a car of its size. I get 8L/100km around town and can get down to 5.5-6L/100km on the freeway.

I recently had a ride in a 2.2 JTS. Whist it was a very nice smooth engine, I found it lacking in power compared to the 2.4. But I assume it would feel more nimble to drive due to the lighter engine up front.

The 1.9 jtdm's I haven't any experience, but some say it also feels sluggish compared to the 2.4.

V6 3.2 159's are awesome, and the one I'd go for personally. Coupled that to a 4wd system, it's a sweet setup.

Most logical would be the 1750 though. Power, lightness and economy all in one.

Also buy a Ti if you get the chance. Got extra sporty bits and pieces.

Plenty of other folks on here aswell that I'm sure will be keen to share their opinion.

Cheers, Andrew.

Hi John
Welcome aboard and hope you find the Alfa your looking for. I have no direct experience with either the 159 or Brera, but the advice given on choice of engine and manual combo seem to be the way to go.  My advice when looking to buy is to check it has been looked after and preferably with a good service history. Have the car checked out for signs of accident damage, drives and accelerates well (no hesitation, misfire or crunching of gears) and no warning lights staying on. There are good checklist available and can be found on this forum or google search.  Finally, I have provided links to reviews of the Alfa Romeo 159 and Brera.
