147, Manual to Selespeed (yes, I did mean that!) Questions

Piece of cake, right?

I realise this is a dash out job, as the harness needs exchanging! Are the Selespeed TCUs hard coded or can they be Proxi aligned to any ECU/body module?

Are any of the 156s suitable donors as well?

You'll also have to replace the gearbox, clutch components, Engine ECU, Body Computer and key immo chip. (They are a matched set)

Why you ask, the Engine Ecu's require different inputs/outputs. For example, when changing gears the Engine ECU automatically reduces the throttle during the gear change, and that is just one of several differences.

That's a shame.  I was hoping a config would just allow commands exchanged between ECU and TCU to pass via the CAN lines as if nothing had changed.

Hmm, if you really want to go from manual to sele, why don''t you just  sell your 147 manual, buy a sele and and get a ticket to Bali with the change... ;)

Apart from a distinct lack of enthusiasm for tropical holiday destinations, the car in question is both a known quantity and better in this way than many I've seen.

So many have been offroaded, or suffered dealer service, or pure parsimony, brute ignorance, whatever - that they command significant effort to make them "nice" on more than a skin-deep, transient level.

Is the manual transmission in your current car knackered? (I seem to recall you already had/have a second, selespeed 147?)

No, not really.  The '02 Selespeed just lives 1400km distant to this one, and a friend happily drives it when I don't.

Time to swap 'em over? If you meet halfway, it'd be a great excuse for a 1400km road trip!

Said friend is quite partial to the Sele, also that car has the Bose kit and sunroof which they love.

I'm not charging into anything, but gently scheming.  :)

Another reason not buy a third car, is I'm so over the de-gooping procedure for consoles and sundry bits.  It's tiring and dirty.

I know of a ACT based 2001 147 Twin Spark Selespeed, 80,000km very very good original condition and well pampered, full Alfa specialist service history, Bose sound, silver blue in colour for sale. Motor is in perfect condition. Catch is it does have a Sele problem. Helped the owner start diagnosing it but it has let him down again and he just wants out - needs a reliable car for the run to work. Originally showed a sensor fault for the selection rail, changed the PF2C and ran the calibration routines and it came good. He drove for a few more days and it failed again (dropped into neutral and wouldn't restart). No fault codes but it shows a 3/5 selector fault when running the calibration routine. Pump runs fine, accumulator is fine. I think it either has a crook solenoid or the gearbox itself has a fault where the shaft wont move. Anyways, it will be a good little project and a very nice care once sorted. Let me know if you are interested.

Interesting to not be a silver or red Sele of that vintage!  A worthy project, but probably a diversion from where I want to point. If you'd said it had been heavily T-boned and the interior was sold already, it might be my thing.

Pat, when one sensor fails I usually suggest to change all 3 sensors. A selector fault during EOL calibration is usually caused by one of three things -

A/ Worn/Faulty Selector Sensor (on top, in the middle of the actuator)
B/ Worn Faulty Position Sensor  (on the back of the actuator next to the L/H drive shaft)
C/ Loose/Incorrectly torqued "Pinch Bolt"  (the bolt that connects the Selespeed actuator to the gearbox selection shaft)

Changed B Baz (only had one spare at the time), and the pinch bolt was fine. A would have been next but the owner didn't want to proceed. But the sound this one was making while trying to run step 2 of the initial setup - it obviously couldn't move the selector shaft. I think it was time to lift the actuator, check the trans and check some solenoids.
