Hi 164 Brains Trust

Need to elevate my 164 at the front so I can diagnose and repair the power steering.

If will probably be up for a few weeks, does anyone have suggestions on the best location for the jack stands?

Thanks in advance

Shane

Hi Shane
For the front end of the car, you could try placing the stands under the suspension cross member or suspension lower arms to give you clear access to the power steering box.

To initially jack up the front of the car, I use a trolley jack under the front tow hook. It's located under the radiator support in the middle under the front bumper.

For the jack stands, there are actually 4 jack points where you can set up a jack stand. They are located under the side skirts under the front door and the rear door on each side of the car. Simply place a stand under them and lower the car. These positions do not interfere at all when working under the car and gives you plenty of room to move around.

There are actually little indicators on the bottom skirts that show where these points are. Look out for little triangles that point downwards to their location.

For the rear, I again use a trolley jack under the rear suspension cross member. However, to avoid buckling the metal, I use a piece of timber that spreads out the load.

If you need any pictures, let me know and I'll post some up for you.

Andrew.

I will have to call you out on a foul there Andrew, everything Andrew said is my course too except for the rear jacking point, jacking up via the rear crossmember puts rear wheel alignments out plus crushes, pulls in the crossmember internals, commonly seen on all 164s as this is where most people assume to jack, yes a piece of wood can lessen the damage but believe it or not the actual 164 rear jacking point is at the very rear, the area where the tow bar is designed to go as in the attached photo.
