So by saying that Alfa Romeo to join F1, what is actually being said is that the Alfa Romeo name will be attched to a team that uses Ferrari engines???

Sounds a lot more like marketing rehtoric rather than actual involvement.
Pretty sure that what ever exists of Alfa Romeo, they don't actually have the resources to go and build their own F1 engine/powertrain, let alone a complete car.

It should read, 'Alfa Romeo badges to be stuck on customer Ferrari Motor'.
The works Ferrari motor is the 2nd best Formula 1 engine.
The customer Ferrari motor is most likely on par with a Renault Motor.
If the Ferrari customer motor is last years, then it will be battling with the Honda motors for 10th place.
Then it will be used as a marketing exercise and money given to bankrupt Swiss team who can't afford to pay mechanics wages, and their chief engineer has left for another team that will give him his paycheck every week.
They have not much sponsorship and need 2 pay drivers.
The cars are built in Switzerland, which is the most expensive country in the world to manufacture anything.
Sauber made great endurance sportscars with Mercedes engines.
Then they entered formula 1 and were mid pack.
They had a good year and when there was money about in the mid 2,000's, Peter Sauber's masterstroke was to sell the team to BMW for a lot of money.
Superstar formula 1 driver Robert Kubica made the team look good.
Kubica mangled his hand in a rallycar in the off season and couldn't drive a Formula 1 car again.
The financial crisis hit and BMW feeling the chill winds of reccession practically gave the team back to Peter Sauber.
They have struggled ever since.
Team manager Monisha Kattenborn was not at last race due to a crisis at the factory, most likely the Ballifs turned up and changed the locks at the factory.

McLaren are IN F1.
Ferrari are IN F1.
Renault are IN F1.
BMW (I think BMW are) and Mercedes Benz are IN F1.
Alfa Romeo won't be IN F1, it's just avertising.

Love the Quadrofoglio verde F1 ,,, Beside's the subject of Alfa n F1 ,  on another level , Alex Wurz and the driver's fed. are in a sort of revolt against the way F1 is being run , ie , new rules, ridiculous new quali and reduced pit to cockpit radio plus next years supposed reduced downforce rules , who knows where f1 is going to end up , but funnily enough last weekend in Bahrain the fastest ever lap was recorded by Hamilton in Quali ,despite Engines being half the size they were previously , the Engineer's seem to alway's find a way around the rules ..

At the Melbourne Grand Prix, there was a story about Aston Martin being back in Formula 1 after a 55 year absence, it turned out that they are a partner [nee sponsor] for the Red Bull team, you would be hard pressed to see the stickers, John Wyer must be spinning in his grave.
The Red Bull team has a customer Renault motor that has been tagged TAG engine, for sponsorship purposes.
Alfa Romeo entered and withdrew from Formula1 in the olden days, when they had some cash floating around, they would go into Grand Prix racing, then they would develop a new road car, they would withdraw and put the money into developing that type of car.
With Alfa Romeo only having one model that is selling in any volume, they [Fiat] should put the money into a new range of road cars, so they aren't a one trick Pony.
If they feel the desire to race again, there is a good Touring car series in the United Kingdom, that they might have a chance, Colin.

Rest at ease that "new quali" rubbish is "out of here" from China GP...sometimes I think they are dreamed up by some  x factor, masterchef etc TV ratings guru...well fail on that stupid idea.

Sauber Formula 1 team has been purchased by Swiss based company, Longbow Finance in SA, in a deal that will see founder Peter Sauber retire from his role as President of the board of Directors.
Hope it goes better than when that Finance mob purchased Renault/Lotus and turned a front running team into cellar dwellers.
No word on what supply of motors, sorry power units in the future, Colin.
