I have a 1985 GTV and I am thinking of doing an engine change to one that is slightly modified out of an earlier model.
Mine is a late series and has the different inlet manifold and a throttle cable instead of linkages.
Are the early and late cylinder heads the same and can I just change the inlet manifold to suit my car.

Following this with interest - thinking of doing the same to my 84. My understanding is that it should be fine - I believe head and block remained the same, while the bolt on bits changed slightly including manifold (i recently did carby mounts and was sent the wrong gaskets/mounts originally - which were off the earlier model/manifold).

Without hijacking Robert's thread, the head I'd like to use is off a 1.8L motor. My understanding is that all that changed between the 1.8 & 2.0 is the stroke length - so head should fit?

I'll leave it up to those who know. Great post though Robert.

I tried to do the same thing but the newer manifold, if bolted up to the old head, doesn't completely cover the  coolant channels and leaves a big gap at the front of the engine.  In the end, after looking at all of the options I used the older model engine block and had my newer model head reconditioned.

I'll see if I have some photos to demonstrate.

Thanks Craig,

It looks like that's not going to work, now as the older type cylinder head has been modified, I will have to find out if I can modify the older type manifold to take a throttle cable.
