916 Spider/GTV gear selector linkage and rods
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:51:21 AM »
Had my power steering rack come loose all together during a drive in my Spider  a couple of weeks back. Having restored my steering back to normal, evenso where the gear selector rods are attached to the steering rack, I believe they were placed under undue strain as gear selection was tricky and I now think whatever bushes were there may have been stuffed. Anyhow, has anyone ever had any consumables in the area I'm looking at replaced? or have heard, read or seen these items somewhere on the www, having trouble locating anything on the subject.

Look at the article on November the 12th on 147 gear linkage bush replacement, [i would put up a link, but i don't know how], look at replacing the bushes and linkage on the gearbox, as they are known to wear out, and see how you go, if i remember rightly the cables have an adjustable rod and linkage for wear and stretching issues, if you are unable to get it working properly after doing the bushings and you are out of adjustment on the cables, you will have to get new cables, they are available from the usual UK spare part places, Colin.

Yeah Col, I've seen that thread. Only my phase 1 Spider has a different set up with the gear selector linkage, really should get some photos of it. Its all rods, no cables. Haven't found anything even close to my issue where its starting to be really clunky and a little hard to tell if I've managed to put it into 1st gear. I've attached the ePer diagram of the area I'm looking at. Should just see if a local Alfa specialist can just order the parts for me, just being a little lazy here  ::) Its amazing how the internet with all its wonderful information and access has a habit of making us lazy.

Seeing it has rods and no cable then just replace the bushings, have a look at EB Spares and The Alfa Workshop in the UK for some clues, as ever get some prices from the local vendors and see how it all looks, when you have fixed it all up you can tell us whats best, solid rod in the Spider or cable change in the 147, one of the first front wheel drive cars to have cables was the BMC Austin 1800, it was quite bad compared to all the newer cars, quite simple really, one cable goes up and down, the other goes left to right, Colin.
