I wasn't entirely sure which section to post this question in but figured most Victorian racers would see it here.
What lap times are the faster 2 litre Alfas (preferably those on R tyres) doing around the Winton short circuit these days?
I can't wait to finally have a run there next September with the East Coast Challenge meeting.

Brent, Without slicks anything under 1:10 is really fast for a 2L car. Most don't get under 2:12. I did 1:05.21 in an official aroca sprint and 1:04.9 in practice the day before.... But that was on new Perelli slicks and with a 4.55 diff that really suits the short course at Winton. Here in Vic, only Seby M. has a 2L car that consistently runs under 2:10...

Both Spencer Rice (group Nc) and Tony K (Sc) have done plenty of laps under 1.10 in recent years, into the 08s in fact.
In the late 1980's a couple of us in Club Car/GpN 2.0lt Alfettas used to run under 10's on Jurasic Yokohama A001Rs, same as Noah used on the trailer for the Ark, narrow rough track and no curbs to cushion the slide. 1:09.8 stood as a 2.0lt R-tyre record for about 12 years, well into the 2000's....... ;D

The track was a hell of a lot rougher and tighter then for sure. Classic example - the entry to water tower/penrite was much narrower so you had to brake earlier and in a straight line, carrying less speed through the corner and slower out.
I recall we got down to a 1:10.something in Fang in the early 90's. Which as Vin and some others will remember was a pretty standard Alfetta GT with a very mild PACE engine, some really old second hand slicks and not much else. I think we did something like a 12 or 13 with the original standard 1.6 (yes, 1.6 not 1.8)
Alister, each time I hear that story the engine gets smaller!! Do you have a photo of this wonder car to share? :)

Alister, Some memories i have of Fang were:
1. How it used to get blown away by Mini Cooper's off the starting line at Winton . It used to take a couple of laps to get going.
2. There was a series of articles in Cross & Serpent following the build & history of Fang . If you can't find them David Crump may have a set buried somewhere.
3. What ATECO or its predecessor used to get away with importing. A 1.6 Litre pretending to be a 1.8 litre GT what will they try and do next.

Thanks Paul - I'd forgotten about those articles. Sadly I lost my pre-2000 magazine collection in a spare room cleanout some time back.
The incident I remember was at the first Winton 24-hr, it's first major event. It started the race and within 45 minutes was black flagged for leaking rear main seal. 4 hours and lots of swearing later it was fixed. Did 6-hrs on the track in the end.
