Post by Gary687 >

As a newbie to this forum but an owner of 2 Alfa's, can I thoroughly recommend Automotion (www.automotion.com.au) in Albion. They have worked on both my cars (and shall continue to do so) as the combined knowedge and experience of Chris and Cameron is exceptional. The quality of their work and friendly nature means I shall not be going anywhere else for any of my Alfa needs. Check out their website and you'll see their heritage and see whay they're as good as they are.

Re: Ron and Bruce at Leda.  For me personally, he has made vernier cam pulleys, machined throttle bodies, made an intake manifold to fit bike carbs to my Suzuki road car, along with one or two other things.  Bruce set up the negative camber and wheel alignment on my Suzuki, as well.

Ron also made the CAMS-approved rollcage for a friend's car, with Bruce custom making most of the suspension (how often do you see an AWD, turbo Mighty Boy?).

the best guy to contact for cams approved rollcages is bruce dummit of nambour radiators. he is always doing runs to brisbane with his tilt tray so he can pick up your car most weeks and he does an expert job. fully welded and approved. very experienced racer himself so he knows what he is doing and the best thing is, he is way cheaper than other so called experts. i'll get back to you later with a phone number.

Also did a friend's Datsun 1600 and did a nice job at a rather surprising price!

I keep hearing about Gary Stewart in Algester, a carby wiz apparently. Has anyone got contact details and location for him?

bowds116

Sorry to say your info is not correct and he doesn't really work on Alfas unless it is under duress. His engineering prowess relates to making MX-5's go quick and they are all injected.

You might try Jim Milliner at Smart Automotive at Stafford. If he's in a good mood, he'll look after you. :D

Steve, AROCA club member Julian Lord is also very good with Alfa carbs (rebuilding, balancing, tuning). He works during the day but tinkers with a few Alfas on weekends. 38866433. Long way from your place though, as he's over near Lakeside.

Stop sending people to Jim MD... I'm being very patient....

Steve, just watch out you don't go in there wanting your carbs sorted and come out with Motec  :)
Title: Re: Queensland Alfa Service Providers
Post by: MD on November 16, 2011, 08:16:55 AM
Yeah I think I know what you mean. He loves Motec gear and who could blame him?

Where there is a waiting que to get work done, there are usually good reasons. High expectations and too few hands would sum it up. I have been part of that backlog and it's frustrating but the end result has always been worthwhile. I bet London-to-a-brick that Vin Sharp wishes he had 6 more pairs of hands sometimes.(..er name used under poetic license,Vin :))

Anyhow, the topic is carburettors and Jim (amongst others)can do the job well. He might joke with you and suggest swapping that boat anchor Alfa engine for a Nissan motor but he will do a good job nevertheless. He can't help himself. He is a racer himself :)

Title: Re: Queensland Alfa Service Providers
Post by: OzMidnight on March 17, 2012, 12:08:05 AM
Hi MD...Gary Stewart is indeed a carby wizard, as well as EFI.  He cured a long ailing Quadrajet on my 164kW atw cruiser VH 253 and also jetted and tuned the Yamaha R1 carbs on my Suzuki GTi (he worked on Suzuki engines even before the MX5's!).  However, he tends to do word of mouth stuff these days, as far as I know, as well as specialised stuff like engine and piston design for some of the sports car racers, such as Grant Watson.
WhiteAlfa (is that you, Jamie?), have you tried doing a google of places near you and the checked for reviews on them?  You might be able to find a gem near you that way.

He did a lot of work on the Bob Whitehouse cars that I know of and was also helpful in sorting stuff out for the Brick. Shame to see him go but that scene is about to be repeated all over Australia when the Baby Boomers head for the hills.

Hi anybody know a good mechanic on the Gold Coast or Byron Bay? My daughter's 2004 147 Twin Spark broke down last night - the mechanic that it was towed to in Byron thinks its the timing belt but he can't fix it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Occasionally I get asked if I know any carburettor tuners in Brisbane. The answer is yes.

Gary Stewart from GSL Engineering Services @ Learoyd Road, Acacia Ridge, 3273 3164

Gary has a chassis dyno and will tune your carburetted race car only with this proviso:-

The entire car is well maintained and in a fit condition to have a dyno workout. Everything on it works and all it needs is a tune up. It is not a street vehicle for everyday use.

He does not do any maintenance or other general repairs to get it to that stage. You will need to see your regular mechanic to do that if the car requires it.

He does not tune racing motorcycles.

If you want a personal endorsement, Gary tunes my race cars and does a great job.

Guys

If you are on the GC.. try Phil at Maranello Autos for mechanical, restoration, servicing and a bit of tuning. He also sells private collectors cars on consignment as a favour to his diverse client base.

Always approachable, he comes from a great mechanical pedigree, with his shop located at the back of Burleigh Heads

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this forum, but on my 3rd Alfa now. I'm also on the Gold Coast and want to know why people seem to shy away from Revolution...to me they seem expensive but from Maronello's website I'd have thought they would be more so... I've been living in South Africa and could get my 156 services well by and great Alfa shop for $120 so to hear Revolution does a service for $360 was a shock, but they quoted me $1100 for timing belt. Are they ok?

Ah, I see your problem.

Direct answer to your question : I don't know.
What I do know is that he doesn't keep standard business hours being semi retired. Try him between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM he is usually there.

But definitely still running the business even if it is a little layback.  ;D

It's unfortunate - If I can't raise him today, I won't be able to have parts for the weekend, so I'll probably just wind up putting through an order with one of the UK suppliers and have the parts monday/tuesday anyway... And ordering from interstate in the past has shown me it's somtimes faster to order from the UK.

I've been trying him roughly every 20 minutes since 10am...

Ok to answer my own question I visited Both Revolution autos at Southport and Maranello autos at Burliegh heads... here is my results

Revolution: in my opinion...they are full of themselves... I'm an engineer and he wouldn't listen to what I was saying...I have an issue with my selespeed selector but he tried to tell me it was the pump or the Actuator... so no

Maranello, I put the care in to get lower control arms and a window rewinder... I found the parts...and he's still got the car, hasn't started the work... if you drive an Alfa you are second priority to Farrari owners...he's had the parts for 2 days and hasn't started the work.

So please... is there a good Alfa workshop in Brisbane? I'll drive there before using these GC guys.

I've been very happy with Richard at Avanti spares (northgate) - not 100% sure how much he does on newer Alfa stuff. Haven't been to automotion yet, but have only heard great things (enoggera) and my understanding from what I've heard/read is that automotion is THE place to go.

Gazman,

The club sponsors are our recommended Alfa mechanics. Have a look on the AROCA Qld website, or if you've joined the club check our your club magazine. Neither of the workshops you mention have anything to do with the Alfa club.

I personally use Automotion at Enoggera for my road-going Alfa and my two racing Alfas. Cameron Wright at Automotion is very experienced with Selespeed boxes and should be able to diagnose your issue.

Ferris Lee at Quattromotive also has diagnostic equipment for Selespeeds and is a very experienced Alfa mechanic.

Contact details for both workshops are on the AROCA Qld website.

There are several other club sponsor workshops to choose from but I can offer a personal recommendation for these two guys.

Cheers,

Brent Hampstead (AROCA Qld President)

Hey 105 Molar,

I used to use Sal Mineo in Townsville. He put a 3L in my GTV6 but that's going back nearly 10 years now. I'm not sure if he's still working. Also there was a place in Rendle street called Len Ellis motors that used to look after my 105 and 116 Alfas.

I'm not sure if either are still operating.

gazman65,
sorry i didnt actually see this thread before. I too have a lot of trouble finding alfa service on the gold coast. as it seems no one wants to touch it because they say it is too complicated and it is due to give other problems while fixing an issue.
Have had lots of trouble with "revolution automotive" documented here on the forum:
http://www.alfaclubvic.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,10929.msg67310.html (http://www.alfaclubvic.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,10929.msg67310.html)

thinking in giving C.L.(before your post i thought they were only a classic alfa workshop), Quattomotive(as hammer said they have selespeed diagnostics) or Automotion(which i heard has lots of experience on selespeeds) a try with the issues on my 156 Selespeed.

if any of them fixes my problem, it would be worthwhile.

Title: Re: Queensland Alfa Service Providers
Post by: MD on October 08, 2014, 10:48:59 AM
"great mechanics" work on any cars save for a factory trained dedicated Alfa mechanic who is unlikely to be available in your locality. Unless he has admitted that he doesn't know how to work on Alfas, have a little faith and give him a chance. Country mechanics can be really well rounded talented people having to service cars, trucks, tractors, motor bikes, mowers -the list is endless.

It may cost you a little more in time for the guy to get familiar with the engineering and procedure but if he is an experienced person he should get better with regular work on your car. The inconvenience of having to travel much further afield will offset the charge.
Title: Re: Queensland Alfa Service Providers
Post by: Blue Daimler on January 01, 2015, 05:13:40 PM
Thanks MD. I will due in early January 2015 is it worthwhile buying diagnostic tools I have a manual now so can provide that to him. I also have laptop and am willing to purchase multi scan product, but am confused between alphdiag and multiscan software.
Title: Re: Queensland Alfa Service Providers
Post by: MD on January 01, 2015, 08:10:15 PM
I think at this stage, it may be wise to have a frank and personal chat to your proposed mechanic and ask the hard questions like does he feel he could do your work given the necessary information ? Is the key problem a lack of diagnostic tools in his workshop? What (if any) key issues that are impediments?

If it is a lack of factory diagnostic equipment then you have to live with that and seek help elsewhere.

However, regular servicing of your vehicle to keep it running well and safe should not be reliant on diagnostics* and therefor your local mechanic could well take care of the bulk of your needs.

(*I am basing the above advice on general knowledge of "older" cars and not necessirilly on current gizmo equipped machinery so I stand to be corrected  :) )

Hi,

I read a previous post on this page about who does roll cages. From memory it was pretty dated- so does anyone know of anyone who currently does roll cages?
I want a good cage but dont want to pay performance shop prices as ive heard of cages being done anywhere from $1500-$7000.
I am after a full cage for my Alfa 75 thats just about ready for the track.

Also does anyone know the cams requirements as I occasionally want to put it in hillclimbs at Mt cotton , Grafton and Noosa but not sure if they have to be cams approved and log booked? Ive been along to a few events at Lakeside, ipswich and Morgan park and cages arent even required at the sprints and regularities so im not sure what I need to get.

Any feedback would be appreciated or if anyone has a bolt in cage lying around would be better!

Thanks guys,

Luke

Hey folks,

Wondering if anyone had any recommendations for service providers in Townsville? I'm embarassed to say my 916 GTV V6 has suffered a couple of years of neglect, but I'm in a position now where I can give her the TLC she needs and want to get her back on the road. Just want someone who actually knows the cars to work on her as I've had a bad experience in the past with mechanics who just haven't respected the car.

Cheers,

Hi All,
I would like to ask fellow Alfa Romeo 4C owners in Brisbane to whom they take their car for service?
Especially as now comes the time when in the large service all chassis bolts have to be tightened.
Any recommendation for an excellent mechanic? Ferrari Brisbane where I normally would have gone to unfortunately stopped servicing Alfa Romeos.

And Melbourne head office doesn't care about customers in Queensland.
Thanks

But will be heading to https://www.automotion.com.au/ when the warranty is done with.

Hi All,
I would like to ask fellow Alfa Romeo 4C owners in Brisbane to whom they take their car for service?
Especially as now comes the time when in the large service all chassis bolts have to be tightened.
Any recommendation for an excellent mechanic? Ferrari Brisbane where I normally would have gone to unfortunately stopped servicing Alfa Romeos.

And Melbourne head office doesn't care about customers in Queensland.
Thanks
Ciao
Marco

Hi Marco,
have you tried Automotion at Enogerra. We're an Alfa specialist and I have a few regular 4C's I look after.

Regards Ben

Are there any recommendations for an auto electrician as my 78 Alfetta GTV needs urgent help. I live in Victoria Point south of Brisbane
