Title: Clearcoat peeling off
Post by: NigelC on July 21, 2021, 05:43:00 PM
Just interested to see if anyone else is experiencing the clearcoat peeling off their Giulia. Mine is garaged the whole time (even in an underground carpark at work) and yet the front bumper is starting to look like a 1983 Toyota ...

Well you got a warranty claim. Sorry to say. Quote the Australian Consumer Law  if they say it is out of the 3 year warranty period.

Can you post some photos of the failing clear coat?

Car may have been damaged then repaired in transit from factory to dealer - not uncommon.  Can happen to any manufacturer.

Quite true, but one would hope the repair job would last more than 4 years. ???

3.5 years and 45,000kms.  The integrity of the red paint on mine is 100%.
Seems you have been unlucky and have a case to discuss this with your dealer.

certainly a warranty job
and i agree with colin it was probably resprayed at delivery from transport damage
when i worked with toyota we delivered a landcruiser that was transported from inner Australia
as he wanted a specific colour
the car was stone chipped from the from right across the roof  (this is anew car)
So they resprayed a $65,000 car back in 1993 without telling the purchaser
VERY VERY WRONG

I didn't think bumpers were clear coated? Usually they are painted with a different type of paint than used on the metal panels, and only the metal panels are normally clear coated.  ???

You learn something new every day.

Nah, same paint (base/clear) but they do use a different primer to key it to the ABS plastic (vs metal)

All those peeling bubbly bumpers you see around the place are just poorly fixed - incorrect or no plastic primer

I know a large repair shop who's main trade is repairs & repaints of new cars for a particular make. They also do the factory authorized repairs on current model cars still under factory warranty, so a serious & professional operation. Very well equipped etc with all the latest gear & tech, training etc. But I was amazed at the volume of new cars receiving remedial work before going onto the dealerships. Apparently all quite normal and as a very large volume maker, plenty of ongoing work too. Not a Euro brand either.
