I had a look at my 75 workshop manual - Section 05 pages 11 and 12.   It has info on the Alfetta and the Giulietta.
Looks like the Bosch coil for the 2.0L engine with the BOSCH "electronic module" is a 0.221.500.002.  The Alfa Romeo part number could be 116.97.65.079.00.
The PO of my 75 fitted one of those BOSCH GT40 coils - what a disaster.  The correct coil is critical.

thanks for the help
after alot of research found out the following
later models have no external ballast so they use a 12v coil like a GT40
BUT as the car gets older the solenoid on the starter sucks up alot and lower this to an effective 7volts ( only on start up)
so the car becomes a pig to start
earlier models have a 12 volt coil with ballast so at start up the key bypasses the ballast so at start up it gets the full 12volts to the coil and then as it runs it drops down to 9volts to keep the coil cool and for longevity
I as usual are running the gauntlet i have always had issues starting the beast particularly if laid up for more than 4 weeks
so i have put the ballast coil in with no ballast so she runs the full 12 volt all the time
i keep a spare in the boot
results : fantastic, better spark more go, no sooty plugs

I checked the coil on my Alfetta gtv 1984 which I think has original coil and it reads 0.221.600.002 it has the electronic ignition - do you think the gt40 coil will be a suitable replacement?

Same as mine fits perfectly
The r series  run at a lower voltage are primarily to save the points from burning
So electronic ignition loves the ful 12 volts
Go the gt 40 not the the gt40 r
