Title: Help with 84 Giuliettas
Post by: Storm_X on December 14, 2008, 08:53:11 PM
I have just bought a new Giulietta and every time I drive it and give it a bit it smells like clutch but when I give my old giulietta a bit the car never smells or nothing and the clutch in the old giulietta grabs straight away and the new one grabs mostly when the clutch is all the way out.
Just want to know if anyone out there would be able to swap over the clutches out of both cars and maybe even the tail shafts for some cash. As I don't have the tools as I am not living at home no more and all of the knowledge to do so.

Also with my new giulietta when it gets to 4-5 thousand revs the car shakes and it vibrates through the gear knob. I'm not sure if it's the exhaust, engine mounts or the tail shaft. The exhaust looks all clear, the engine mounts look ok so I might think it's the tail shaft? Would any one know?

Much thanks Chris

Hi Chris,
Have not seen you at a club meeting yet, good place to ask such questions when you get to know who to ask.It does sound like your clutch is worn and the tail shaft probably needs some new doughnuts.

Cheers
Andrew

No never been to a meeting yet. Was thinking about going on the next cruise if i get to know a few people.

As for the tailshaft i will change the doughnuts see how that goes.
With the clutch i got told to adjust it. i dont knok how to do that yet. will try after swaping boosters over and flushing the oil out nad toping it up.

thanks chris

Hi Chris,
I believe the only adjustment possible is the operating rod on the clutch master cylinder under the dash, this is highly unlikely to help your problem.Take it to a couple of reputable Alfa mechanics for diagnosis and make a decision from there.

Cheers

i just swaped the boosters/master cylinders off the both cars and the clutch still seems to be grabing alot slower. havent drove it yet as i have to bleed all the lines.

just took it for a spin clutch still stinks.

to change the clutch do i have to drop the while gearbox? or can i just take the tailshaft off and drop the front end of the transaxel/gearbox then change it like that ?

Yes,you can remove the exhaust, disconnect the gear stick at the join in the shaft, disconnect the clutch line but cap it with one of the brake nipple covers(makes bleeding much easier later if you dont let all the fluid run out).Unbolt the doughnut and all the bolts from the cross member, next pull down the dedion  and jam a piece of wood or something between the floor and the dedion to keep it down. You may need to take out the center piece of the tail shaft but see how you go,You can unbolt the mounts and then position the frame so you can undo the four bolts and take the clutch out,I think it is described in the workshop manual also.

You probably should loosen the bolt through the rear transaxle bush and if you are wanting to pull the dedion down more you should release the shockers at the bottom.
Good Luck!

Maybe try finding a workshop manual for an alfetta? there is hardly any difference between the cars i believe.
