Hi all, I have a spare engine which in the medium term I plan to rebuild and swap with the existing OK but tired engine in my 1977 Alfetta GTV.
Noticed the other day though, the dipstick seems to be on the other side, compared with the engine in the car?
Checked the manual and the engine in my car seems to have the dipstick on the correct side.
As can be seen from the photos, there is a hole for the dipstick on the fuel pump side.
Welcome any thoughts about what is going on, and what kind of motor this is? (I don't know enough about engine numbers to tell!)

From the position of dipstick it appears to be an early series Nord engine and more than likely 1750 as per link below

Had a look at the engine identification / markings thread, and it looks like my spare engine is a 2.0 - see photo of the head marking.
Also sump is definitely an Alfetta-style one (although I think this style of sump might also be on the later 105 series engines?).
the dipstick on your spare engine is exactly the same as on my '81 2.0L.
Interesting, thanks Poohbah - perhaps the later GTV engines had the dipstick on the other side.
I guess as long as it clears the exhaust manifold, shouldn't be a drama.
yeah, should be no issue with the manifold except to be aware if you're checking oil when hot...
Also, while the engine is accessible check the dipstick tube to make sure its not wobbly or loose. Mine was and was the source of a steady oil leak.
Used some Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealant (which I think is the equivalent to Loctite 5770) on the base of the tube which has tightened it right up, the oil leak is fixed and engine now consumes a fraction of the oil it did before.
dipstick on my '83 Giulietta is under the exhaust manifold. Very handy for checking after a run...

Agree Pafiat and Carlo, probably not the best design feature! Thanks Poohbah for the tip re sealant, will check if it is tight.
The engine oil dipstick is located on passenger side (exhaust manifold) of my car, and learn't from an early age to check oil level when engine is cold ensuring oil has drained fully and not get burnt in the process.
I kind of wish mine wasn't on the exhaust side :o

Provision for an oil level in the sump probe?
