Title: Burman box options
Post by: Alfa.mg on September 07, 2020, 07:18:21 AM
Removed my burman box from my berlina 2000 yesterday. Box had a toothpaste cap as a filler plug, and was leaking. I have found 3 cracks out of 4 holes in the casing, one of which continues halfway down the case.  :'(

The internals, so far seem ok, ill have to clean them up a bit better for inspection.
Im not interested in trying to repair the casing.
I was considering the expensive AH billet casing, but am a little nervous about the quality. Some repro stuff is crude compared to factory items. Anyone done the alfaholics billet case? Any dramas?

Is it true I can replace box with another from a 2000 105? Such as a later spider? Did we have ZF boxes in Australia?

I'll have a crack (excuse the pun!) at answering this...

.On ZF units, i have never seen one fitted to an Oz delivered car but thats not to say they weren't. Those who have handled/wrecked/repaired
this kind of thing may be able to comment. I think if you did find one the attachment holes should be the same and it should fit if...see next point...

.You will need to find a box with the same length steering shaft as there was a 'short' and a 'long' type. Basically the longer types were the earlier ones that had
steering wheels fitted that had a flat type configuration, for example a 66' coupe, Super etc. Later cars that had a 'dished' wheel would have the shorter shaft,
Think Spider, Berlina, GTV 2000 some later Juniors etc.

.Haven't heard a bad thing about the Alfaholics repro box (except the price!) but thats only from what i have read. The guys in the US that have transplanted internals into
the new box didnb't seem to have any issues.

Good Luck.

Cheers,

Paul.
