Title: Alfa 166 2.0 TS Engine Rebuild
Post by: Diamond Ric T on July 06, 2018, 08:45:45 PM
I recently bought a 147 that was otherwise en route to the scrap heap. Neglected car and a broken timing belt to top it off. I did an engine rebuild. Today I turned the key and the engine cranked quite happily but didn't start. Diagnostics indicated a failure of RPM sensor, Phase sensor and catalytic converter sensors - left and right. I thought that it was unlikely that all of these devices could be bung - and so I searched for a badly connected ground connection. Still no joy. I am very open to suggestions at this point. I am certain that if I could get rid of the engine malfunction light from the dash, it would run perfectly. I know that neither the fuel injectors or plugs are active at the moment. I am suspecting that it will be an easy fix.

Hi Ric
Check the condition of each ignition coil. I have attached Youtube link on a simple method using an ohm meter if the car is unable to start.

Check the plugs of both the engine wiring harnesses. It actually sounds like you have forgotten to plug something in.

The reason I say this is that the Camshaft Sensor (Phase), Crank Sensor (RPM), O2 Sensors (Cat sensors) and the coils all plug into the wiring harnesses and they in turn plug into the ECU.

Check the ECU to make sure you didn't forget to attach the ECU earth lead.

G'day,

I suggest to clear the codes and crank over again to see which code returns.

These could be stored codes from a previous failure.

Also, worth checking you aren't getting the engine code display on the dashboard, hopefully the car has the correct chip/ecu set.

Cheers.

Mick.

Hi Nick. Just saw your reply. I did precisely what you suggested. BINGO _ the RPM Sensor. I had one in the workshop. Fitted it and away it went - singing like a bird. Thank you so much for the tip.

Great result.  I'm getting worried about the original one still fitted to my 02 147!

If you ever need a hand to get the new one in just give me a yell (that's if you're near Sydney!)
