Title: Error codes
Post by: Gary Libro on August 02, 2017, 06:19:33 PM
Hi Im a new member and proud owner of a 159 JTS Ti . Recently my Engine light has come on for a few days then goes off. I had it checked and the following code came up P1161 in white -Preheating reistance 2 Aelow Catal and the 2 other codes in black P0014 &P0013 Positioning Diagnosis of Camshaft and Phase Variator Actuator on Exhaust Camshaft.
I'm not mechanically minded at all just love driving my Alfa. Are these serious issues and can anyone suggest what or where I should go to rectify without costing the earth. Don't think this matters but I dont drive the car much  around 4000k per year. It's a 2009 mod and has 85,000km I'm second owner .

Regards
Gary

Sounds like the timing chain has stretched. Not an uncommon fault in a 159. The 159 has a chain driven engine , unlike the earlier 156 which was belt driven. The timing belts have to be changed every 3 years or 60,000 k . I had a 159 and the timing chain had to be changed at about 100,000k. ( if you had a belt driven engine , you would have changed the belt at least twice by that mileage) . Cost of changing the timing chain is around $1000 - $1,200 from memory. With a stretched timing chain the performance of the engine will gradually drop . You might not notice it , but you will certainly notice the improved performance with a new chain.
