Came across an ad on carsales for a nice 159 JTDm here in Victoria. I'd kind of semi-considered these because they sound good and have monster torque.. But this ad has scared me..

Now, this isn't a commentary on the service providers mentioned, I'm sure they are all fine (I even use one of them myself!), but this would seem to indicate $7000 spent for a major service including timing belt, clutch and tires. Surely even being pessimistic, 1500 for belt service, 1000 for tires, 1000 for clutch and 1000 for brakes and I've still only come up to $4500. I know diesels are more expensive to service but wow. Another 159 JTD on gumtree recently quoted $8000 spent over two years. There are probably Ferrari owners spending less on maintenance.
Anyone with a 2.4 want to pitch in here? Seems incredible. For $7000 you could do a very nice rebuild of a Busso!
Seems a bit OTT. I haven't done a clutch (original clutch in ours at 155,000km) but have done a belt change and a full set of brake discs and pads and your estimates match up roughly to my memory (with an independent specialist, not a dealer). You could be a bit low on tyres (but not $2500 low).
Apart from problems with the inlet manifold / EGR / swirl valves (pain in the arse, but now sorted), I haven't found servicing to be that out of the ordinary. Everything seems to cost a bit more than the equivalent petrol engine stuff - e.g. fuel filters, oil, everything is slightly 'premium' - but not robbery.
Admittedly I did buy the belt and tensioner kit myself from O/S...
$1,000 for tyres, mmm, if they are the 19 inch rims as on the TI model try $2,000 for tyres at $500 each due to them being a unique size to Alfa, and being a heavy car driven like an Alfa should, they may have to be replaced at little as 30,000klms, Colin.
No its just a standard, not TI - so 225/50/17s. Would easily find quality tyres for $1000 a set.
My other guesses were just educated roundings. Thanks for replying Evan, I thought you might. Have you had the EGR delete/blank or a remap on yours?
Clutch set and labour for 1000? Maybe for Corolla..
