Introduction

The Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Australia was formed in Victoria in 1969 when a group of like-minded Alfa Romeo owners joined forces to form a club to share their interest.  The Alfa Romeo Owners Club has enjoyed a rich history since then, growing to have  divisions in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia.

Structure

The affairs of the club are managed by a committee which meets on a regular basis, and work tirelessly to ensure the club meets the needs of its membership.  Please see the contacts page for the current officeholders on the committee.

Nationally the club has a elected a National Coordinator who maintains communication lines between each state and Ateco Automotive, the importer of Alfa Romeos into Australia.

Club Nights

Club nights start at 8pm on the second Wednesday of every month at Bell’s Hotel in South Melbourne.  Club nights are relatively informal consisting of some general updates, news, buy/swap/sell, and usually a guest speaker related in some way to motoring.  Members usually arrive earlier (from around 7pm) to enjoy a meal in the bistro, new and prospective members are encouraged to come earlier and say hello.

Early Morning Runs

A regular occurrence on our calendar, an EMR (Early Morning Run) allows members to come together early on a weekend for a spirited drive in the countryside surrounding Melbourne.  Route instructions are generally handed out prior to departure and almost always end in a tasty late-breakfast or early-lunch stop.

Spettacolo

Late each year AROCA Vic puts on a major car display – in recent years at Como Park in South Yarra.  Members and non-members are invited to display their Alfa Romeos on the oval and enter in the wash’n’shine or concours competitions.  The club shop is trading on site, food and coffee is available, and there are also trade displays to peruse.  The day ends with the winners of each class receiving trophies and lining up for numerous photos.

Club Sprints and Motorkhanas

The club runs a healthy calendar of motorsport events for those who want to test their skills.  The main events on our calendar are Club Sprints – a time trial event carried out on a racing circuit.  The club travels to Winton (Benalla), Sandown, and Phillip Island raceways to run sprints.  Members who haven’t competed before are encouraged to prepare their cars to run in the sprints, as it is an low-pressure way to learn to control your car on a race track.

The club also runs Motorkhanas, which are a “non-speed” event involving short circuits or ‘tests’ around a series of witches hats.  These are a real test of car control with near-zero risk of damaging your car, and are a real hoot for those competing.

Driver Training

Once a year in March the club runs a day of Racecraft and Driver Training at Winton Raceway.  During the Racecraft training drivers are able to drive their car on the circuit with an instructor and learn cornering, lines, braking, and gear shifting.  On a separate part of the circuit a general Driver Training course is run, with instructors putting drivers through a series of tests teaching car control during swerving and braking.  These are great experience for our junior members to learn car control and accident avoidance skills in a safe supervised environment.

Annual Dinner and Presentation Night

The club holds a formal dinner annually at which trophies are presented for the previous year.  A fine dinner is supplied, the bar provides drinks, and a guest speaker entertains for all.

Alfesta

Each year a different state division of AROCA holds Alfesta (“Alfas at Easter”) as a gathering of Alfisti from around the country gather and enjoy the shared Alfa Romeo experience.  Four days of events including tours of local attractions, an observation run, show’n’shine, and a formal dinner ensure there’s plenty to do.  Alfesta 2008 is to be held at Mooloolaba on Queenslands Sunshine Coast.

Registers

AROCA Vic has appointed a register captain as the technical contact for a particular model or series of Alfa Romeo.  These captains should be contacted with any technical or general question about your Alfa Romeo.  The captains are also responsible for running an event each year for that register, and contributing technical and historical articles to the club magazine.

Club Shop

The AROCA Vic club shop provides a range of club merchandising including clothing, model cars, keyrings, stubby holders, and stickers.  Click here to view the club shop page showing the current selection.

Magazine and Newsletters

The quarterly magazine of the AROCA Victorian Division is titled “Cross and Serpent” and is published in full colour and mailed to all members.  The magazine is full of the latest club news, reports on recent events, and general articles of interest to Alfa Romeo owners.  A newsletter is published eight times a year titled “Alleggerita” containing current reports and an up-to-date calendar of events.
