The AROCA Group S Challenge kicked off in style with the first Victorian cars competing at the recent Phillip Island Classic on March 10th and 11th.
Phil Baskett, driving an immaculately prepared red Alfetta GTV, put his, and the series, first points on the board with a sensational drive to be the second fastest of all the Alfa’s (eight from interstate) in Group S in his, and the cars, debut outing.
Phil was also second overall in the Under 2 Litre Class for all Group S cars running at the event and finished as high 14th outright in an oversubscribed grid of over 50 cars including Corvette’s, Porsche’s, Morgan’s, MG’s and Datsun Zed's – a fantastic result.
Also competing at the event in the Regularity category was soon to be Group S competitor Ed Hellsten in another red Alfetta GTV. Ed, in his first Historic outing, also put in a sensational debut performance finishing as high as 12th outright in a field of 54 cars. Hopefully it won’t be too long until Ed is bringing that kind of performance to the Group S Challenge.
There are now over 12 cars being developed for the AROCA Group S Challenge, (a mix of Alfetta’s and 105 coupes), which will gradually start to appear over the next 12 months at both race and sprint meetings. And don’t forget if you are not quite ready to go racing, you can start by competing in the AROCA Group S Sprint Class against other Group S prepared cars. It is a great way to get started.
The next round is the Winton Historic meeting on May 26 and 27 where there will be a number of cars competing in the AROCA Group S Challenge plus cars in the regularity category. See you at Winton!
