As usual Clarkson is right. A whole bunch of very enjoyable video clips.

yes, well he is speaking from coward's castle. Several years ago I sent top gear an email suggesting a "drive" from england-italy to italy-england between a 105 and an mgb. Not a sausage in reply. I guess as an engishman he's embarassed, as well he might be. Here's the email (edited) dated 2 february 2006:

G'day. I'm writing from Cairns in Far North Queensland (come up for a blast
one day), and I enjoy the show. I have a suggestion for a fun comparison.

Being a bit of a sports car fan I thought it might be of interest to
your legions of xenophobic viewers to put a Pombucket up against a foreign
Classcar.

I thought it should be a people's car rather than a special, so I had a look
at what was available, and came to the conclusion, rightly or wrongly, that
the classic in that mould was the MGB.

There is plenty to choose from for the Opposition, but one stood out - the
105 Series Alfa.

What I suggest you do is use two independent drivers (a German for the MG
and a Pole for the Alfa, for argument's sake) and if you have a sense of
humor like I do start the MG at Abingdon and the Alfa at Milan and drive
them over an interesting route to a midpoint - say the Nurburgring or Le
Mans or Magny Cour - and do a few laps and generally have fun. Then swap
drivers and continue the journey to the other home point.

I back the Alfa, hands down.

He'll never do it - as it wasn't his idea, it won't happen. Clarkson is a typical pommy know-it-all wanker who loves to be the centre of attention - but then that is the attraction of the show. If he was a shy retiring type, the show wouldn't rate, and yeah, he does like Alfas, but I sometimes doubt the courage of his conviction.

Having now insulted all of the English Alfa owners on the BB, I'll put on my flame-proof suit and wait for the inevitable death threats Smiley
