1969 GT 1300 Junior

Hi All,

After 20-odd years without the joy of an Alfa in my life (my first was a '74 Alfasud TI), I'm now back in the game with a 105 restoration project. So, I'm hoping someone can help me properly identify a 105 I've recently purchased. It's a step nose with a GT1300 badge on the front grille, and the seller advised that it was built in 1968.

I've looked at the chassis ID charts on this site and elsewhere, but none of those numbers bear any similarity to the numbers or the format of the numbers in my engine bay. For example, the lists seems to indicate that the chassis number should look like "105.XX". However, in my case, the number actually stamped into the metal of the firewall on the driver's side (I assume this is the chassis number?) reads as follows:

AR*12912XX* (where the asterix represents a star symbol)

There is a plain/blank brass plate attached to the firewall on the passenger side, which reads (ie no other wording or branding) as follows:

    ALFA ROMEO
     129 12XX
 AR 00530 - 28XXX

The number on the second line above is the same number that is stamped onto the firewall on the driver side (ie the chassis number?), but there is no "105." anywhere to be seen.

I assume the number on the third line above is the original engine number. However, the number "5" seems to be an overstamp covering what may have originally been the number "2". Perhaps this means the brass plate was not factory fitted??

Anyway, can anyone please tell me what model 105 I have, based on the chassis number AR 129 12XX. I can fill in the last two digits if they are required.

Regards,

Nick

There is a self help model identification chart attached to this web site. alfaclub.org.au/modelc.htm
Go to the links above and have a look at the National site and down the bottom there is tab to a Model identification chart.

Hi Gary, Thanks for the response, but as mentioned, I've checked the self help model identification chart on this Web site, and none of the details in the 105 list look anything like the chassis number I have on my car. Maybe I'm just "numerically challenged"!!!

Hi Branko, Thanks for the engine number tip... it does look like the original donk was a GT Junior 1300. Someone has since dropped in a 1750cc motor. I have googled for the PDF serial number list, but no joy. If you can dig up a copy, that would be most appreciated.

Hi All,

AR*12912XX* (where the asterix represents a star symbol)

There is a plain/blank brass plate attached to the firewall on the passenger side, which reads (ie no other wording or branding) as follows:

    ALFA ROMEO
     129 12XX
 AR 00530 - 28XXX

I'm, getting good at this...
...My recent research tells me  a 129 12XX is a 1968 1300 GT Junior. My info tells me 1967 Juniors range between 1290001-0655, 1968 Juniors from 1290656 to 1483 and 69 from 1291484 onward.  The engine ties up with a 1300 too.  Have a look at the front of it for a symbol in a circle. An "I" in a circle = 1300.

Hi Edward, Thanks for that, you're a legend. The 1300cc engine has been replaced at some point. The symbol on the front of the head is a circle containing a tiangle with a dot in the centre of the triangle. I understand that this means its a 1.8lt Alphetta motor. The engine number is AR01608 S 15XXX. Thanks again to all. Cheers, Nick

When I wanted to find out info on my 69 GT Junior I sent a mail to ArchivioStorico@alfaromeo.com and asked them for info about my car.  A couple of days later they sent me this reply:

Dear Mister Campbell,

with reference to your request we are informing you as follows.

According to our documentation files, the chassis number AR 1292285 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior RHD (105.31), manufactured on the 20th February 1969 and sold on the 7th Mach 1969 to Alec Mildren from Pymble, Australia.

The body colour is pine green, with wild boar leather skai interiors.

Yours, Sincerely,
Marco Fazio

As it happens, I also stumbled onto the "archivioStorico@alfaromeo.com" email address. In their amazingly prompt response, I learned that my car is apparently an "Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior RHD (105.31), engines series AR 00530, manufactured on the 24th October 1969". They went on to advise that "the body colour is ochre yellow, with black skai interiors". They even managed to identify the replacement engine as having originally belonged to an Alfetta GT 1.8lt.

Cheers,

Nick
