I have had my 1973 105 GTV since 1980 and she is desperatleeeeee in need of a total engine rebuild.
Can anyone suggest a good place to have this done... my regular mechanic cannot do the job at the moment... I have pistons rings and liners... I am after a great job... as it needs to last me for another 27 years...

At the moment is is sitting in a workshop - head off - ready to check the bottom end... but while we are at it... lets do it properly.

while she is being worked on are there any simple mods that will give some more sparkle... valves, porting... etc...and perhaps let her run on unleaded???

I look 4ward to your advice... until then I have to drive my sons sprint...

I was hoping to get everyones opinion on the cost of my engine recondition.

Like Mark (the OP), I have 1973 GTV 2000 105.

Living in Perth I always get my car tuned/repaired by Ciliberti Motors who have always done a good job.

I am currently getting my engine reconditioned by them, as well as new extractors, cams, engine balance etc.

I was very surprised to find the cost of my engine recondition coming to $7000, with another $3000-$4000 for the cam/extractors/etc.  I can post a complete quotation and list of repairs if anyone is interested.

Is this quote about average for a 105 engine?  Would have there been a cheaper option?

I would love to see a breakdown of the costs. I have 4 105 engines and am deciding which will be the cheapest to rebuild once I get to that point with my Sprint GT Veloce.

On top of this I requested bigger cams - here is the hand written quote given:

theres $1400 worth of cleaning in the quote that you could save by doing yourself (although a lot easier to do with the engine out) and $600 worth of engine welding so it sounds like your engine isnt up to it to start with and you might be better off with a new (old) block.  Not sure what the $468 for headstand is.

But, other than going to one of the other Alfa specialists in Perth, Cilebertis will do a good all round job.

As for cams and extractors - there is only one source for those and they have been Alfa proven over time - PACE in Melbourne. Depending on cams you could get these and extractors for about $1200 plus delivery (and if you do, i might be able to help with delivery as i want to buy some extractors and 2 piece fronts spoiler of PACE too shortly).
